ABC meeting report!
The Association of Boxing Commissions recently held it annual meeting in Las Vegas Nevada, July 26 - 30, 2005 at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino. During the meeting the following occurred.
This year was an elections year. The following individuals were elected to 2 years terms.
Tim Lueckenhoff, Missouri, President, (third term)
Dr. Edwin "Flip" Homansky, Nevada, 1st Vice President (first full term)
Michael Mazzulli, Mohegan Athletic Commission, CT, 2nd Vice President (first term)
Anthony "Buddy" Embanato, Louisiana, (fourth term)
Joanna Aguilar, Santa Ana Tribal Commission, (first full term)
Highlights of the Meeting included:
The Unified Championship Rules were amended to allow boxer to wear approved boxing gloves, therefore, in essence a during a championship boxing contest a boxers may were glove from two different manufactures. The URC were amended to take the Commission's out of the arguments between boxer's camps when the type of glove selected was at issue.
The ABC adopted a new criteria for the rating of boxers. During the last two years the ABC has been working closely with the World Bodies to develop a criteria that can be followed. While we feel this criteria is very good at this point, the ABC will continue to meet two times per year face to face with the World Bodies to hammer out more restrictive criteria. The ABC has also adopted a policy to review and comment on the rating of boxer who feel they have been wronged.
The ABC amended its bylaw to allow for tribes and states that are considering forming a commission to become associate members which would allow them access to the information that is shared among the membership on a weekly basis.
The ABC also voted two new Tribal Boxing Commissions to its Membership:
The San Juan Pueblo Boxing Commission, San Juan, New Mexico
Pasqua Yaqui Boxing Commission, Tucson, AZ
With the addition of these two tribal boxing commissions that brings the total of 11 tribal boxing commissions who are members of the ABC.
The ABC issued a three year contract with of options of two additional years to Fight Fax, Inc. to be a certified boxing registry. Fight Fax is the sole certified boxing registry. Each member of the ABC is required to obtain their boxing records from Fight Fax before approval of a boxer to compete. Fight Fax also maintains the national suspension list at www.fightfax.com which is used by each commission prior to approval of a boxer to participate.
The ABC Official Training Seminars continue to grow, just this summer alone, the ABC has provided training to the NABF, International Professional Ringside Officials, Winnipeg Boxing Commission as well has hosting both a referees and judges training seminar at the Annual Meeting. At these seminars, the ABC has certified over 200 Officials. The Trainers include Duane Ford, Armando Garcia, and Jay Nady. The ABC is slated to provide its judges training seminar later this year at the WBC convention in Spain. Last Fall, the ABC provided training to the WBO at their annual convention and has ventured to several states to provide training.
