Gatti vs Ward
Ward vs Gatti could be signed this week
By Mike Nosky: It seems as if we have been down this road before but a source close to “Irish” Micky Ward has informed SecondsOut that a deal is nearly finalized for the much-anticipated showdown between Ward (pictured) and junior welterweight counterpart Arturo “Thunder” Gatti.
It wasn’t that long ago that the camps for both of these modern day warriors were hard at work to get Ward and Gatti in the ring. But, after contract demands from both sides held the deal up, Lou DiBella stepped in and helped broker a deal for Ward to fight James Leija.
Once Gatti signed to fight Terronn Millett, an HBO round robin-type tournament was set up and all that was left was for both fighters to take care of business.
Well on January 5-, Ward lost a highly disputed technical decision to Leija when a cut, that was ruled to be caused by a headbutt but was shown to be from a punch, forced referee Lawrence Cole to go to the cards after the fifth round.
After that fight, most still felt that Ward deserved to get the huge payday that would accompany a Gatti fight and he, along with his manager Sal LoNano and DiBella, was ringside in New York for Arturo’s fourth round stoppage of Millett, a former IBF champion, in January.
According to one source, Team Ward has agreed to everything needed for the fight to happen and all that is left is for Gatti to sign on the dotted line.
“I thought that Gatti looked good against Millett; real good,” said the source on Monday. “That was as good as he had looked in a long time. It’s a tough fight but it’s the fight that Micky wants. Gatti is our guy. We will be talking to DiBella later this week and I think the deal will be done within 48 hours.”
The fight could be slated for April on HBO. Both the 13th and the 27th are possibilities.
It will be a war!
