This year, the tournament is set to partner with DKMS for a Super Celebration of Life & Hope on Monday, June 19, 2006 at 4pm with a VIP Cocktail Reception preceding the star-studded opening day game. The EBC, the nation’s largest basketball tournament, has created legends & stemmed urban folklore at the Holcombe Rucker Memorial Park for over 25 years. Throughout the years, the tournament has attracted fans from all over the world. Dubbed as the “Streetballer’s Ultimate Playground,” NBA professionals like Allen Iverson, Kevin Garnett, Stephon Marbury & more can be found on any given day, showcasing their skills amidst the bells and whistles of this tournament’s fanfare. DKMS is the largest bone marrow donor center in the world. DKMS works to save lives by providing bone marrow donors for patients suffering from life threatening diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma. DKMS’ mission is to facilitate more transplants between DKMS donors and patients in the United States. An estimated number of 35,000 children and adults could benefit from a bone marrow transplant each year, yet only about 7% actually find a match. Strong supporters of DKMS, Jennifer Lopez and Hip-Hop Icon Darryl McDaniels, DMC of Run-DMC constantly raise awareness about the shortage of minority donors.
The two organizations have worked diligently to provide a day of activities that will provide both entertainment & hope for the 3000 plus fans that will be in attendance. This year’s host will be Rap Icon DMC of the legendary Rap Trio Run-DMC. DMC is also the ambassador for DKMS’ grand endeavors in the Northern US. Pegged to perform are rap legend DMX and the Terror Squad Diva Remy Ma. 6pm will be the highly anticipated tip-off of superteams D-Block (coached by Jada Kiss) and H-3. At halftime, fans will have an opportunity to view the Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Motorcycle which will be signed by celebrities and auctioned on eBay to raise funds for the fight against cancer.
In speaking of THE fight against cancer, this year’s efforts are to help a very special child. Jaden, an African-American 2-year-old boy was diagnosed with acute leukemia (a form of blood cancer) in April 2006. He is currently undergoing treatment at CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia). There might be a cure out there for him, but not unless he finds a donor. Afro-Americans only comprise 8% of the national donor base. Help us save Jaden’s life and other patients who are in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant.
