“Irish” Micky Ward returns to ring
In his amateur tournament June 10 in South Boston
Almost exactly one year to the day he retired after his epic third fight against Arturo Gatti, “Irish” Micky Ward returns to the ring Thursday night, June 10, but this time as a coach, not a boxer.
The “Irish” Micky Ward Boxing Invitational, featuring many of the finest amateur boxers in New England, will be held that evening (June 10) at the Teacher’s Union Building in South Boston.
“It seems so long ago,” S & L Boxing president Sal LoNano, who also was Ward’s manager, said. “I think it’s great that a former world champion like Micky Ward (WBU light welterweight champion) is giving his time and experience back to amateur boxing. The kids he coaches really love and respect him.”
In addition to coaching, Ward will be signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans at his tournament. A portion of the proceeds from the “Irish” Micky Ward Boxing Invitational will benefit the new South Boston Boxing Club on L Street.
Some members of Team New England, recently returned from a successful trip to London for the second annual Pender-Downes Challenge Cup Tournament, are scheduled to compete June 10: Ward’s nephew, open 141-pound Sean Eklund (15-6), of Lowell; open 165-pound Matt Ryan (10-0), of South Boston; open 178-pound Pat Long (9-3), of South Boston; novice 141-pound Tony LaMonica (5-1), of South Boston; novice 178-pound Billy Traft (5-1), of Dorchester.
