Just after midnight Wednesday morning, the Observer broke the story that the Charlotte Hornets reached an agreement on a $63 million, four-year deal with restricted free agent forward-guard Gordon Hayward. Here are some things to know about the deal:

Since Hayward, 24, is a restricted free agent, his former team – the Utah Jazz – will have the option to match the Hornets’ offer and retain him. Jazz officials have indicated in the past they would match any offer another team makes for Hayward.

The Hornets’ only realistic hope of landing Hayward was to offer him the maximum contract allowed under the collective bargaining agreement. Is that more than Hayward is worth? Arguably, yes. But he’s the free agent the Hornets targeted and their strategy is to make an offer high enough the Jazz might hesitate to match.
6) Would adding Hayward help lessen the blow of losing Josh McRoberts to the Heat?
Among the things the Hornets will lose in McRoberts – ball-handling and passing from the frontcourt – are Hayward strengths. His 5.2 assists per game ranked 26th among NBA players. Only three non-guards – LeBron James (6.4), Kevin Durant (5.5) and Joakim Noah (5.4) – averaged more assists last season.

Hayward had a storybook high school and college careeer. He led Brownsburg High to the Indiana Class 4A state championship, scoring a game-winning basket at the buzzer to beat Marion High 40-39. He averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds as a senior.
He also led Butler to a runner-up finish in the 2010 NCAA championship. After beating No. 1 seed Syracuse in a regional game and Michigan State in the semifinals, Butler faced Duke for the championship. With Butler trailing 61-59 and seconds left, Hayward grabbed a rebound on a missed shot, dribbled and then launched a half-court shot at the buzzer. The ball hit the backboard, then the rim and bounced out.
9) What does this mean to small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist?
As good a defender as small forward Kidd-Gilchrist is, he’s no 3-point threat. He attempted 18 3s his first two NBA seasons, making three. Kidd-Gilchrist averaged only 24 minutes as a starter last season. Keeping his minutes at roughly that next season would let him defend more aggressively, without concern about foul trouble.
The other alternative at small forward, former second-round pick Jeff Taylor, is rehabbing from a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered during January.
10) Would Hayward help Al Jefferson?
Clifford and Cho have said the Hornets’ offense will run “inside-out,” meaning the ball always should touch Jefferson’s hands in the lane on any non-fast break possession. Last season Jefferson averaged 22.5 points and 11.2 rebounds and was chosen third-team All-NBA.
The best way to help Jefferson score efficiently is surround him with shooters. Coach Steve Clifford often says your shooting is your spacing, as far as discouraging teams from double-teaming Jefferson.
Hayward mostly thrived in the three seasons he played with Jefferson in Salt Lake City before Jefferson left for Charlotte. Though his field-goal percentage slipped from 48.5 percent during that span to 43.5 percent, his scoring average rose each of those seasons from 5.4 points per game, to 11.8 to 14.1.
Jefferson and Hayward, by all accounts, collaborated well for the Jazz. Jefferson was expected to be part of the recruiting pitch the Hornets made to Hayward.
11) What does this mean to the Hornets’ cap room and ability to sign other free agents in 2015?
The Hornets have a lot of cap space - at least about $15 million once the agreed-to trade with the Cavaliers eliminates $2 million for center Brendan Haywood from Charlotte’s books.
They will get additional cap relief once McRoberts signs with the Heat. However, they’ll likely need to sign another veteran big man in McRoberts’ absence and that’s not their only need; a veteran point guard to back up Kemba Walker is a must.
It’s unlikely, assuming the Hornets retain Jefferson (who makes $13.5 million per season), they’d have much flexibility in the summer of 2015, when they’d also need to address Walker’s restricted free agency.
12) What do the Hornets do next if the Jazz matches the offer and signs Hayward?
It’s unclear what the Hornets would do. Other prominent wing players who could be available are Indiana Pacers shooting guard Lance Stephenson (unrestricted) and Houston Rockets small forward Chandler Parsons (restricted). Stephenson is strong at both the offensive and defensive ends, but has had behavior issues that occasionally became a distraction for the Pacers this past season. The Rockets have indicated they will retain Parsons regardless of what else they do in free agency.

Hornets gefallen mir sehr gut. Auf dem Flügel sehr gute Defender. Walker ist jung und könnte diese Saison einen weiteren Sprung machen. Würde MKG nur einen Wurf haben....
Auf PF isses meiner Ansicht nach auch recht dünne, da ich nicht weiss ob Vonley und Zeller auf Playoffniveau ausreicht? Ansonsten ist Lance Stephenson nat. eine herrliche Ergänzung fürs Team und passt von seiner Spielweise wie die Faust aufs Auge.
Lance spielt ja durch seinen Vertrag quasi unter "Beobachtung" und wird sich mächtig reinknien.

Aber darüber hinaus hat es auch endlich mal geklappt, dass Team wirklich zu verstärken und einen mMn sicheren Playoffkandidaten im Osten zu basteln. Lance Stephenson kann eigentlich alles auf mindestens gutem Niveau und Noah Vonleh passt perfekt rein bzw. wird mindestens perspektivisch ein Glücksgriff sein (für mich an #9 ein Geschenk). Sicherlich kann er sich auch in Ruhe entwickeln, da es in Jefferson schon einen potenten Big Man gibt, der eine große Last schultert.

Ich glaube nicht das Vonleh sofort starten wird.
Marvin Williams wird Starten, mit Zeller als Back-Up und Vonleh bekommt den Rest.
Trotzdem ist der Frontcourt etwas zu dünn b.z.w Jung
Glaube ich nicht. Wenn ioch bei den Hornets eine Schwäche ausgemacht habe, dann ist es Spacing. Vonleh kann das Team geau in disem Punkt besser machen und deswegen wird er auch ordentlich Spielzeit bekommen.
Ich deke 20 Minuten wird er sehen. Marvin Williams wird wohl auch eher in Richtung 25 Minuten sehen. Zeller kann auch Center und wird da BaCKUP-Minuten hinter Big Al machen.

Glaube ich nicht. Der sah in der summer league schon noch richtig roh aus. Und sein "guter Wurf" basiert auf einer Stichprobe von 33 3er Versuchen bei 16 Treffern. Da sollte man die Kirche schon mal im Dorf lassen und ihm Zeit geben sich zu entwickeln. Zeller, der deutlich weiter war letztes Jahr hat auch nur 17min gespielt. Ich denke wenn Vonleh 15 Min spielt und regelmäßig eingesetzt wird können er und die Hornets schon zufrieden sein.

Nachdem er die meiste Zeit des Training Camps verpasst hat, dürfte dass erst ab Mitte der Saison klappen.
So, nach der tollen Auftaktpartie (aufgrund des Comebacks in erster Linie) gegen die Bucks nun etwas Ernüchterung. Was sich im ersten Spiel angedeutet hatte, setzte sich nun in den letzten Partien fort: Lance ist noch überhaupt nicht angekommen. Leitet zwar hier und da das Spiel ganz ordentlich, kann aber im Scoring noch keinen Punch erzeugen, sowohl beim Slashen zum Korb als auch von Außen.
Kemba hardert weiter hefitg mit seinem Wurf. Gefühlt ist seine Quote bei 30% aus dem Feld.
Ein Lichtblick bisher ist Gary Neal, der reinkommt und von Außen gefährlich ist. :thumb:

Nachdem Kemba und vor allem Lance im letzten Jahr ihren Wurf verbessern konnten, sieht es zu Saisonbeginn düster aus. Kemba aktuell mit 40% (gegen die Lakers verbessert) und Lance 30%! aus dem Feld. Dementsprechend verliert man dann auch gegen die Lakers. Trotz der Siege gegen die Hawks und Heat zweifel ich aktuell, ob das ohne Trade noch etwas wird, auch wenn die Saison noch jung ist.
Heute sollte es dann von den Blazers auf die Mütze geben. Alles andere würde mich sehr überraschen.

Hornets können trotzt der Verpflichtung von Stephenson bisher nur wenig auf sich aufmerksam machen. MKG wiedermal verletzt und macht immernoch nicht den Eindruck eines Nr. 2 Pick.

Weil er kein spektakulärer Offensivspieler ist oder weshalb nicht (ernst gemeinte Frage)? Für mich war sein letztes Jahr für einen Sophomore richtig gut! Offensiv war es passabel (außer FW) und defensiv erinnerte er mich an Andre Iguodala, wenngleich er natürlich noch nicht so weit ist. In den 6 Spielen bislang spielt er auch offensiv richtig effizient, wobei natürlich die Sample Size klein ist.
Es ist halt eine Frage, was man will. Offensives Spektakel oder jemanden, der defensiv den Laden auch mal zusammenhalten kann. Charlotte war letzte Saison ein sehr gutes Team in der Defense, Hauptgrund dafür war MKG. Ich finde mit ihm hat man alles richtig gemacht.
btw: Solche unauffälligen, effizienten Spieler muss man doch einfach lieben...:rocky:

defensiv kann man MKG in die obere Klasse einordnen, aber offensiv sehe ich nicht das was ich mir erhofft habe. Sein Wurf sah zuletzt nicht toll aus, obwohl er 62% seiner Würfe trifft. Naja abwarten, die Saison ist ja noch jung
