About 12 years ago, around the end of John Amaechi's senior year at Penn State, I was told by a mutual acquaintance that the beloved, Brit-import PSU men's basketball center was gay. There was no rumor about it, the friend said. It was common knowledge among the PSU homosexual community. This was 1995. I was a little surprised at first but then not so much. And my initial overriding thought was, boy, I wonder how the homophobes in central Pennsylvania would feel if they knew. All those straitlaced Penn State faithful who thought Amaechi was one bundle of things they adored. Patriot-News
In a lot of communities, including a whole bunch of people in the NBA and longtime PSU hoop fans, Amaechi has been "out" for a dozen years. I'll bet he didn't know that.
