While Detroit must react to the Rockets’ decision at No. 4, I’m hearing the Pistons will be strongly considering five prospects with their selection if they stay put at No. 5: Amen and Ausar Thompson (Overtime Elite), Cam Whitmore (Villanova), Jarace Walker (Houston) and Taylor Hendricks (Central Florida).

All five of those prospects have worked out with Detroit over the last two weeks, according to multiple league sources who agreed to provide background while not being authorized to speak publicly. Hendricks, in particular, impressed in front of Pistons executives and coaches, most notably with his shooting. The 6-foot-9 forward, has the potential to be an impactful 3-and-D wing for the Pistons immediately upon arriving in the Motor City, assuming he ends up being the pick. There’s room to grow into something more, too, if he can improve his ballhandling and decision-making. The 19-year-old forward with a 7-foot-1 wingspan can defend multiple positions, as well, due to his ability to slide his feet.

Ausar Thompson also has some big supporters in the Pistons’ front office, according to those league sources, and very well could be who Detroit takes in Thursday’s draft. The 20-year-old Ausar is more of a wing than his brother, but both are supreme athletes with good size. In his 2023 NBA Draft Guide, colleague Sam Vecenie wrote that Ausar Thompson reminds him most of Andre Iguodala. I couldn’t agree more. The potential Ausar Thompson has a secondary or tertiary creator for others really drives that home, as do his physical gifts, finishing ability and questionable jump shooting.
Vielleicht droppt Brandon Miller doch an 5, Problem gelöst. ;)

Hmm....
The intel shifted in recent days following Whitmore's workout in Detroit, indicating that the Pistons may look in a different direction, be it trading down or selecting another player such as Walker. Making Monty Williams the highest-paid coach in the NBA unquestionably gives him input on how the roster is built, and the expectation around the league is the Pistons will want to pivot to respectability as quickly as possible. Should Detroit trade down, Jalen Hood-Schifino has come up as a prospect the front office is high on, as well as Gradey Dick, Taylor Hendricks and Cason Wallace. Pistons general manager Troy Weaver showed deft ability maneuvering around the lottery last year to position himself to land two elite prospects in Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren, and it's possible he looks to do the same again, possibly with a team such as Utah (who holds the No. 9 and 16 picks). -- Givony

5. Detroit Pistons

Ausar Thompson | 6-6 wing | 20 years old | Overtime Elite

Thompson is the name that has made it to my airwaves most in the days leading up to draft week – and that could mean everything or nothing. Thompson has fans in the Pistons’ front office, and he does fill a void on the current roster as an athletic wing. He’s electric in transition and defends at a high level. Like his brother, Ausar processes the game well and has real secondary or tertiary playmaking upside. Defensively, given his length, athleticism and compete level is where the biggest upside lies with Thompson.

The jump shot has a ways to go, I have questions about how his game will translate right away in a half-court setting — his knack for cutting is impressive, though — and projecting Overtime Elite prospects, particularly ones on the older side, like Amen and Ausar are, isn’t easy. However, Thompson has a lot of qualities coveted by Pistons general manager Troy Weaver, and the idea of what Thompson might look like if everything clicks could be too much to pass up for a franchise trying to “restore” through the draft. — James Edwards III

:D

Sasser-Pick bekommt sehr schwankendes Feedback, was ich bisher gelesen habe.

According to Marc Stein, the Pistons are expected to make a run at Cameron Johnson when free agency begins next week.

Johnson, who was acquired by the Nets from Phoenix as part of the Kevin Durant trade, will be a restricted free agent on June 30. Due to his status as one of the better 3-and-D wings who will be on the market, he won't lack suitors. Detroit, which employs Monty Williams (who coached Johnson in Phoenix, of course) as head coach, is expected to make a run at his services. That said, the Nets have made it clear they plan to match any offer Johnson receives. But is there a price that they aren't willing to pay? Johnson would fill a clear need in Detroit, as the rebuilding Pistons have talented options at the guard positions (Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey) and in the post (most notably Jalen Duren).
