Hawks draften K.J. McDaniels
Die Atlanta Hawks haben in dieser Draft an 15. Stelle Small-Forward K.J. McDaniels gewählt. Der junge Flügel aus Clemson soll direkt in die Backup-Small-Forward-Rolle schlüpfen und von Anfang an Erfahrung sammeln. Der Head-Scout der Hawks fasste die Fähigkeiten des Neuzugangs so zusammen: „McDaniels ist ein sehr vielseitiger Spieler. Los Angeles, Kalifornien. Nachdem bekannt wurde, dass NBA-Commish Alley, der auch als Interims-GM für Minnesota agiert, und Lakers-GM Evolution einen regelwidrigen Trade durchdrücken wollten, stehen beide unter Beschuss der Medien und den GMs der Liga.
Obwohl beide ihre Unschuld beteuern und behaupten, sich einfach nicht genau mit dem CBA beschäftigt zu haben, ist der Rest der Liga nicht sicher, ob man Alley und Evolution in Zukunft noch Vertrauen schenken sollte. Es geht das Gerücht rum, dass Evolution Druck auf Alley ausgeübt habe. Angeblich ging es dabei um den Trade von Chris Paul 2011 und dass "die Liga noch was gut zu machen hätte". Beide hätten die Rechnung aber ohne Irenicus, den GM der Thunder, gemacht, dem der Trade von Anfang an nicht Geheuer war. Laut einem Insider verlor Evolution im Front Office kurz darauf die Fassung und bezeichnete seinen GM-Kollegen in einem Tobsuchtsanfall als "dämlichen Klug******er, der überall seine Nase reinsteckt". Die Seriösität dieser Quelle darf jedoch angezweifelt werden.

Wie Paul Pierce am Rande von Spiel 2 der Nets gegen die Heat sagte ist es seine feste Absicht auch nächste Saison an der Seite von Kevin Garnett zu spielen. Pierce wörtlich:

Die Freude über den Pick von Kristaps Porzingis ist groß. Der junge Lette ist ein langer, dürrer Spieler, der mit einem enormen Talent ausgestattet ist. In der letzten Saison ging Porzingis noch mit Sevilla auf Korbjagd und konnte seine Stärken unter Beweis stellen. Er ist ein sehr beweglicher Forward/Center, der über solide Post Moves und einen guten Wurf verfügt. Um in der NBA bestehen zu können, muss er sich allerdings körperlich stärken und ein paar Muskeln zulegen. Jonas Valanciunas hat bereits angekündigt, dass er sich darum kümmern wird, den Jungen aus seinem Nachbarland auf das Spiel in der NBA vorzubereiten und als Mentor zur Verfügung zu stehen. Coach Casey wird versuchen Porzingis in das Team zu integrieren und ihn in wenigen Minuten behutsam an das NBA Niveau heranzuführen. Zuvor steht dem jungen Letten aber eine harte Offseason bevor. Der Kraftraum wird sein neues zu Hause werden müssen. Der 18-jährige hat aber noch genügend Zeit, um sich zu entwickeln.

With the 43rd Pick, the Warriors draftet PF/C Patric Young out of Florida. Here is what GM Guerrero had to say a few hours after the Pick:
R: Mr. Guerrero, you where said to have targeted former "SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year" (as a junior) and current "Defensive Player of the Year (SEC)" Patric Young from the start, now you have him on your team. How happy are you?
GM: Im very happy. It was a struggle at times because we saw teams starting to draft Big Men early in the second Round, so we started to get nervous. We wanted Young badly so we tried to trade up a few spots but it didn't work out, so we had to hang in there and luckily, we got the player we wanted from the moment we got the Antlanta Pick.
R: You seem to be very confident about Patric Young's abilities. Why was HE the target and what do you think he can bring to your team?
GM: Well, Young is basically NBA Ready in many Categories, which makes him valuable in my eyes. I watched him play for the Gators many times and he impressed me with his Athletisism, his leadership and his defensive Skillset.
The kid is 22 and was a main part of the Gator's success (defensively) in recent years. He is a great Low Post Defender, has great upper Body strengh, defends the weak side very well (blocks shot, takes charges), has good quickness and lateral speed, which makes him a great Pick and Roll defender. I mean this guy is doing it all on the defensive end and even though he is slightly undersized, he has the IQ and the Body (wingspan and reach) to defend slightly bigger guys than him. I think he works well in a small ball lineup with Draymond Green but can also take the defensive part next to Bogut when it comes to getting Stops.
R: Well, you sure make him sound like an allstar, why did he fall so far in the Draft? (laughs)
GM: Well, he has a great skillset that can help any Team immediately, but what I think some experts believe is that there are questions on the offensive end and many believe that there is little room for great levels of improvement. Im not sure I agree with all of it. I can tell you right now, that Young wont ever be scoring Option Nr1, 2, 3 (at least not in the near future). Thats for sure. I do think he has certain qualities on the Offensive end. He is 6th among Prospects in Offensive boards. He cleans up misses and creates second chances. Secondly, he set Picks like brickwalls. Ive never seen anything similar in recent years and certainly not in this draft. He is a good finisher out of the Pick and Roll, and he runs the floor in transistion. These things help our team. Yes, he can't space the floor and he needs to work on his shot selection and footwork in the post when he is trying to score, but we were not looking for a scorer. He didnt evolve as much of an offensive Player, but there are things he can work on: Footwork, shot selection, even a jumpshot can be learned. He is already great off the ball, cuts to the Basket and he can definetly score around the rim, so there are some things to work with. He is also an absolute energy man, a role model athlete and just a great guy who will fit into the locker Room like a dwarf fits into a suitcase.
His low rebounding numbers on the defensive end are a problem, but it is clear that this has more to do with the level of commitment and energy, rather than sheer ability. We will make him work on that, its a mental thing and thats good, cause these things are easy to work on.
He reminds me a bit of DeAndre Jordan in many ways. He brings much needed athletisism to our Big Men Rotation
R: Which role will he position himself in as a new Player in the team?
GM: Young will have the chance to developp as a player behind veterans like Bogut and Lee. He will get playing time straight away, as a member of our second Unit. We know that we need to develop him slightly, but he can help us right away and it will give him a boost of motivation knowing that we are building on him to be a part of this team, but at the same time knowing that he needs to work hard to stay there. He is exactly that kind of guy. He steps it up when things get important, and well, there little to nothing more important than making the transition to the NBA right now...

Coaching destinations for Karl, Hollins and the van Gundy brothers could emerge within the next few days. All four have multiple interested teams to choose from and seek coaching a playoff team next season.

There are still no other salary cap projections than the one from April 19th, which projected the 2014-15 salary cap to be $63.2 million and the tax level to be $77.0 million. Official decisions on the cap will be made a few days after the end of the draft at the beginning of the free agency which will possibly be dated tomorrow.
