WBO cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson retained his title by split decision over Vincenzo Cantatore Saturday night at the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome, Italy. Nelson put the early rounds in the bank and that proved decisive as Cantatore came on strong down the stretch. Cantatore knocked down Nelson in the ninth and wobbled him several times in the closing rounds. It was too little, too late, however, as two cards read 116-111, 115-112 for Nelson, while the third was 115-112 for Cantatore. Fightnews scored it 115-115. For the 38-year-old Nelson, it was the 13th successful defense of his title. Earlier Nelson's next opponent Enzo Maccarinelli annihilated Marco Heinichen in just 98 seconds. Also, in eight-round bouts, jr welterweight Brunet Zamora outpointed Viktor Baranov and middleweight Gary Lockett outscored Victor Kpadenue.
