HONG KONG SKIPPER PRESSEKONFERENZ (30. Januar 2018)
Anhang anzeigen 15191
Dee Caffari, skipper, Turn the Tide on Plastic: "What I'm most proud of in my team is that although we have not yet got any results, they have not once dropped their heads. They're still fighting hard and they’re developing even more self-belief and confidence that our time will come."

David Witt, skipper, Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag: “I don’t think winning Leg 4 will change how we sail. Maybe we’re a bit more confident. But you’re only as good as your last race so we’re about to get back to reality pretty quickly.“

Bouwe Bekking, skipper Team Brunel: “You have to love racing and you have to love the ocean. It’s a big challenge to get a team together. It’s not all sunshine. You have big struggles and it’s nice to come through that with your team. Of course, you want to win. I haven’t won the race – three times second – so that remains the goal. That’s the motivation.”

Simeon Tienpont, skipper, team AkzoNobel: “Bouwe was my hero when I was a kid. He’s still my hero! As a child you get inspired by this adventure. There’s only a small group of people who do this. It’s a team sport, and you have to get each other through the tough moments. It’s not like soccer where you can get a taxi back to the hotel. Here, whatever happens, you have to get through it together and that’s what inspires me about the Volvo Ocean Race.”

Charles Caudrelier, skipper, Dongfeng Race Team: “The leg to Auckland is what I call a dangerous leg. We have to cross the Doldrums and we know it’s complicated and a bit random and we’re concerned about being the guys who catch a bad cloud this time. But it’s also one of the best legs as you arrive in Auckland which is a fantastic place where people really know offshore racing and love the race.”

Xabi Fernández, skipper, MAPFRE: “It does make us crazy (losing miles in the Doldrums)! But you can jump or you can stay. We have to stay and stick it out.”

SKIPPER QUOTES
David Witt, skipper, Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag, on raising the profile of sailing in the region: “Let’s not forget we had two Asian teams running first and second in Leg 4 of the Volvo Ocean Race and I think that’s a great indication of the interest and the growth of the sport here in Asia and I think you’ll see more of that in the future.”

Dee Caffari, skipper, Turn the Tide on Plastic, on building skills with her young crew: “Every day is a school day for us. We learn every day... Everybody is continuing to develop and improve. Now we have to make sure our rate of improvement is a little bit better than these other guys and I’m sure our results will come.”

Bouwe Bekking, skipper Team Brunel, on how the Volvo Ocean Race gets under your skin: “You do this race because you love the sport… Is it an obsession? I don’t think so. I just love my sport. I always dreamed about doing this race and I’ve fulfilled my dream.”

Simeon Tienpont, skipper, team AkzoNobel, on getting hooked on the race at a young age: “It’s important to grow up with the sport. In Netherlands we have a big history with the Volvo Ocean Race, there have been many dutch teams. So when I grew up I sailed my Optimist but on Sundays I’d go to my dad’s office and we’d plot out these routes and during the week at school I’d figure out which boat was which. That got me inspired by the race and got me hooked. I feel very lucky to be one of the few guys in this world to be able to race with my own team.”

Xabi Fernandez, skipper, MAPFRE, on whether the other teams are catching up and narrowing the advantage to his team: “Last edition we were on the other side, we started bad and kept coming up throughout the race. We knew it would not be easy this time and all the teams are going to keep improving. You only need to see the crew list on each team to see the experience and quality of people. For the moment, our preparation is giving us a slight advantage, but it’s going to be harder and harder. Hopefully we can keep it going our way.”

DANKE GUANGZHOU!
The Volvo Ocean Race fleet will depart Guangzhou, China on Monday 5 February to head back to Hong Kong before beginning Leg 6 to Auckland, New Zealand.

Following the Race's fourth stop in mainland China in four editions, the boats are heading back to Hong Kong and are expected to arrive Monday evening local time.

The fleet will then restart in Hong Kong for Leg 6 to Auckland on Wednesday 7 February.

China has a decade long history with the race, having first hosted the event in 2008-09 when the boats stopped in Qingdao, and Ian Walker's Green Dragon crew included the first Chinese crew member in history, as Guo Chuan stepped onboard as Media Crew Member.

A visit to Sanya followed in the following edition, as Aussie sailor Chris Nicholson, sailing in 2017-18 with team AkzoNobel, skippered Team Sanya.

In 2014-15, Charles Caudrelier's Dongfeng Race Team featuring a host of Chinese rookies, wrote a new chapter in the history of Chinese offshore sailing, capturing hearts and minds around the world as their underdog story saw them battle all the way around the world.

They're back (and stronger than ever) this edition – and we've returned to the region too, with first-time visits to Hong Kong SAR and Guangzhou. The race also boasts a Hong Kong-flagged team for the first time in Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag.

"This my third time that I've been to China with the Volvo Ocean Race. We have been for a few days and it's different than to what we are used to, but very nice," said Brunel skipper Bouwe Bekking.

"An excellent marina, and the infrastructure is superb. The organisation is fantastic and it's clear that the Chinese know how to put things in to place very quickly.

"It's been very nippy, temperatures around 10 degrees during the day and colder during the mornings, so everybody looks like Michelin Man, heaps of clothing on!"

The Volvo Ocean Race fleet slipped lines at the Nansha Marina in Guangzhou, China on Monday morning in preparation for Leg 6 to Auckland, New Zealand, which will start this Wednesday following a short stop in Hong Kong.

For Liu Xue (aka Black) racing on board Dongfeng Race Team in the next leg, it was a homecoming he will not forget: “For me this has been a magical few days with the team arriving in China and visiting Guangzhou where we have enjoyed the support of our friends families and everyone at Dongfeng.”

The Guangzhou stopover marked the fourth time the Volvo Ocean Race has stopped in China over the past 10 years, beginning with the Olympic sailing venue of Qingdao in the 2008-09 edition. Subsequent races have visited Sanya (2011-12 and 2014-15) and now the current race is in the Hong Kong SAR and Guangzhou, China for the first time.

Six teams in the Volvo Ocean Race fleet are scheduled to cross the starting line off Hong Kong for Leg 6 to Auckland on Wednesday February 7 at 1300 local time (0500 UTC), although strong winds are forecast which may push the start time earlier to get the fleet away ahead of the big breeze. Race Management will confirm the start time within the next 24 hours.
