"I think anyone that read Windy's very judicious piece, can figure out that a bigger picture exists that we can probably piece in many of the blanks, but you still won't know the entire story.
We're dealing with a complex situation ...with a complex individual. But one many players and coaches have come to know and care for... probably more than he does for himself.
He came public with the issues he deals with, with being bi-polar. Took strength and courage to pour out your personal demons and weaknesses in the sports world in which he earns his living, and coming from where he came from.
But, he's a strong but complex man, with many paradoxes and contradictions.
He's a funny and entertaining guy to hang with at times, and a dark, sad, unfulfilled man as well ... depends on the moment or day.
I have a child that has endured the same issues that Delonte has dealt with. It's lead us, as a family, into treatment with our eldest daughter as she's struggled with anorexia, and drug abuse issues later on in life. Just when we've felt we were out of the woods we'd find ourselves back at ground zero once again.
Anyone who hasn't lived with these issues in their lives can't understand. Hell, I want Delonte to wake up tomorrow and make all the right choices and decisions in his life, but he won't. It's not how he's built.
The worst thing a person with his disorder can do is bring drugs or alcohol into the mix. On his side of the ledger, it's what he'll admit when truthful in therapy, is the only thing that makes him feel the way he wants to feel, when he wants to feel perfect.
Unfortunately, caving into that .. extends and deepens the problems associated with his disorder.
I've had some of the deepest and most genuine and real moments with Delonte in our one on one time together since he's been with us. He's got lots of pain he carries with him and has never seemed to come to terms with in his life ...his crutch and his means of needing acceptance and freindship comes out in his personality. But, anybody who knows ... some of he funniest people on earth draw that sense from the pain and tragedy they've dealt with in life.
While everyone saw that KFC video as humorous, I saw it more as a cry for help. I'm not sure about the last week or so, but, he hadn't been returning calls from people for a while and more than a few were concerned. I guess Lebron did get through to him at one point, but don't know what all it was about.
The team isn't as much upset as concerned. We want to get him back here and see where he's at. But, his best friend needs to start being himself. He's got meds he's supposed to take as prescribed. Along with that he can't be drinking alcohol either ...or anything else.
Everyone likes to think they can have the awareness and control to take themselves to the edge, but always recognize where they are at, and always be able to right themselves when they have to, to live another day.
The reality with the bi-polar mind is it can swing so strong and violently in anoither direction that they can't control it."
