TOKYO — So severe was the pounding Rodel Mayol took from the Thai titleholder Eagle Kyowa on Saturday night that moments after the decision was announced, the Filipino fighter vomitted, raising concern for his condition.
Mayol, who earlier complained of dizziness, was then immediatel y brought to the hospital where he underwent extensive medical tests.
According to the husband and wife tandem of Yasuo and Gina Matsuoka, Mayol, who almost succeeded in lifting Kyowa’s World Boxing Council (WBC) minimumweight crown at the Korakuen Hall, vomitted at the dressing room.
"I was very much concerned of his condition because I remember last year in Yokohama, I was the one who rushed Filipino boxer Ayon Naranjo to the hospital after complaining of headache," said Gina, a native Cebuana who’s been living in Japan the past 20 years.
Naranjo suffered a lopsided decision to Japanbased Venezuelan hotshot Jorge Linares and spent one whole month in hospital here before being allowed to go home to the Philippines. Naranjo, who was used to be handled by Leonel Lazarito of Bukidnon, has been advised not to box again.
Mayol was given a CT scan and was still hooked on dextrose Sunday morning although doctors at the Japan University Hospital have assured the Matsuokas that the boxer is doing fine and is conscious.
"But the doctors there said Rodel has to go through an MRI para masiguro nila na talagang okay siya," said Gina, who revealed that the brain scan taken on Mayol immediately after his taken to the hospital turned out to be fine.
At presstime, Mayol was still confined at the hospital, which the Matsuokas said, is the medical center accredited by the Japan Boxing Commission.
The Matsuokas also revealed that when they arrived with Mayol at the hospital, Kyowa was also there on a wheelchair.
"He also complained of headache and Mayol told us that round 13 will be held at the hospital alley since the two of them are there," said Gina.
Malcolm Tunacao, who saw action in the undercard when he stopped Yasuo Kijima in the 11th round to keep his OrientPacific Boxing Federation bantam title, was on Mayol’s bedside and they just chatted until 5 a.m. of Sunday. Tunacao and Mayol traced their boxing roots to the gym of Tony Aldeguer of Cebu.
Gina said expenses won’t be a problem since Mayol is insured.
