Turkoglu will likely start at Stoudemire's power forward position next season and that will give the Suns a very different look at that spot and also give them more options. The 6-8 Turkoglu excelled as a playmaker for the Magic in the playoffs in 2009, running the pick-and-roll with All-Pro forward Dwight Howard relentlessly in Orlando's Eastern Conference finals win over the Suns. In Phoenix, he could have a similar role that would allow Nash to play more off the ball and not have as much pressure game in and out as the team's chief ballhandler.
Childress, the sixth pick in the 2004 draft from Stanford, is a 6-foot-8 swingman who is a quality defender and averaged 11.1 points over four seasons with Atlanta, shooting 52.2 percent from the field and 36 percent on 3-pointers.
To come to Phoenix, Turkoglu would yield about $5 million of his trade kicker and reduce the guaranteed money on the final year of his contract, which was worth $12 million in 2013-14. He also has an early termination option on that season.
The Suns have yet to fill their vacant front-office positions, although sources have said that Lon Babby, Grant Hill's and Turkoglu's agent and Childress' agent until recently, will lead the Suns' basketball operations.
Sarver said he is seeking "a new structure" with hires who excel in talent evaluation, communication, knowledge of collective-bargaining agreements and negotiation skills.
Sarver said the process has helped him learn more about his team, like just how important people thought Channing Frye was to spread the floor with long-range shooting. The Suns, spurred by five-year, $34 million offers from other teams, gave Frye a five-year, $30 million deal, $8 million more than they expected to pay him.
"The more we analyzed our success, the more it became apparent that Channing was a key piece of what we did," Sarver said. "When you combine that with his health, age and character, he was a piece we didn't want to see leave."
