"Campeon Azteca promises to deliver exciting fights, if not a potential Mexican star or two by Mark Ortega
Starting September 13th, TV Azteca will be running two tournaments side-by-side in both the lightweight and featherweight divisions to crown El Campeon Azteca. What does the winner get? A guaranteed WBC title shot as both Edwin Valero and Elio Rojas have agreed in principle to fight the winners of these two eight-man tournaments that feature no big names but also feature very competitive matchups that promise to be explosive.
Featured are sixteen names you might not know very much about, but what makes this event great is that at least two fighters will realize the ultimate dream of fighting for a world title. The best thing is, they will have to earn it by beating three opponents that are on their level in true pick'em fights.
The eight fighters participating in the featherweight tournament are as follows: Miguel Beltran, Jr. [19-0, 15 KOs] who will meet Eduardo Lazcano [14-0, 7 KOs] in a first-round matchup; Abraham Rodriguez [16-6-2, 8 KOs] who takes on Alan Herrera [16-1, 11 KOs]; Daniel Ruiz [16-1, 11 KOs] who fights Cristian Lopez [14-0, 13 KOs]; and Miguel Roman [25-5, 17 KOs] who will do battle with Andres Romero [14-1, 8 KOs]. None of these guys are world-beaters but all are serviceable fighters that promise to make some exciting matchups. The early favorite might have to be Miguel Roman who has fought the superior competition and has lost close fights to Fernando Beltran, Jr. and Jorge Solis, both of whom are solid fighters.
At lightweight, Jesus Gonzalez [13-0-1, 8 KOs] meets Pipino Cuevas, Jr. [13-3, 11 KOs]; Ricardo Dominguez [27-5-2, 16 KOs] takes on Saul Carreon [13-1-1, 7 KOs]; Reyes Sanchez [15-2-1, 10 KOs] fights Alberto Sandoval [7-0-2, 4 KOs]; and Ivan Valle [27-8-1, 23 KOs] meets Enrique Colin [29-4-3, 24 KOs] in the first round of the tournament that will determine a challenger to Edwin Valero's belt.
Azteca will televise two fights a week, one in each weight class, while also featuring the backstories of the four fighters that are being showcased in that episode. A chance to build a new Mexican star is at stake, and Azteca is taking it very seriously by bringing in sixteen Mexican legends to participate in the tournament in a large capacity.
The Mexican legends are being brought in as "Padrinos", or "godfathers" to the sixteen fighters. Each boxer will have their own padrino in their corner to give advice and support. The sixteen confirmed padrinos are: Ruben Olivares, Chucho Castillo, Alfonso Zamora, Victor Rabanales, Carlos Zarate, Daniel Zaragoza, Ultiminio Ramos, Jose Luis Bueno, Juan Paredes, Cesar Bazan, Jose Antonio Aguirre, "Chiquita" Gonzalez, Gabriel Bernal, Jorge "Travieso" Arce, Julio Cesar Chavez, and Pipino Cuevas."
