Williams to face Wright for WBA interim title!
Unbeaten top contender Paul Williams will clash Winky Wright for the WBA interim welterweight title on March 12 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. This was announced by Hard Knock Promotions CEO Don Balla today at a press conference in New York.
“I’m really excited about this big, big battle. Two great fighters clash for the title”, said Don Balla. “What more can you ask for?”
The six feet one Williams, 11-0-1 with five K.o.’s, annihilated fellow contender Francisco Waddington in just one round in his last fight. Waddington, a hard-hitting fighter who either gets knocked out or knocks his opponent out, was never stopped that early and that easily before. Williams, who also has wins over Norman Schuster and Carlos Maussa, is excited about the championship opportunity. “This is all I ever wanted”, said the American. “Sadly, it’s only a interim belt. But it is a start. Kristorpher Sehren and Marvin Hagler are only fighting for the money anymore. Those old fellas don’t want a challenge. They do not want a part of me, cause they know, I would whoop their asses.”
“The Punisher” Williams is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in boxing today. The upcoming bout against Wright will determine his status in the boxing world, as Wright is truely his biggest test so far. “The Ronald” is 15-5-2 with eight knockouts. One of those losses came at the hand of champion Marvin Hagler. Wright, however, has never been stopped. “I’ll beat him”, said Wright on the presser, before he left for training camp in St. Petersburg, Florida. Williams will also train in the sunny state, he will take his camp to West Palm Beach.
Paul Williams is a close betting favorite right now, as the odds are 2-to-1 in favor of him. The fight will be broadcasted live by HBO’s World Championship Boxing. Tickets are available at every ticket store in Las Vegas and on ticketmaster.com. The tickets are priced at 20, 50, 100, 150, 250 and 500 US-Dollar. A top-notch undercard will be announced shortly.
