Bench spells deep trouble for league
By ART GARCIA
Star-Telegram Staff Writer
As well as the Mavericks are playing at both ends of the court, the team's biggest strength right now is possibly its depth. And coach Avery Johnson isn't afraid to flex that muscle.
"We like our depth," Johnson said. "We think it is a tool when used properly, when they're doing their jobs."
What's not to like? Johnson did downplay whether the bench is a "weapon," but it's clear the Mavs have a sizable advantage when turning to the second unit.
The bench, instrumental in comeback wins at Golden State and Seattle last week, features three players in their primes -- Jerry Stackhouse, Erick Dampier and Keith Van Horn -- who have been starters most of their careers.
Not that they wouldn't want to start.
"Stackhouse, he bothers me about starting every day," Johnson said with a laugh. "That's a part of his nature. He talks it, but he's as supportive of our system and my philosophy as anybody on the team."
Promising young guards Devin Harris and Marquis Daniels could be starters on a number of teams around the league. If that's not enough of a luxury, third-string point guard Darrell Armstrong has started roughly half of his games during a 12-year career.
"Whoever put this team together needs a raise," said swingman Adrian Griffin, who's vacillated between the first team and bench since joining the team in late November.
Johnson's reserves outscored their counterparts 339-179, an average of 42.4-22.4, during the current season-high eight-game winning streak. The Mavs' bench scored at least 46 three times in the stretch, with only two games of less than 40. The opposition topped 30 once.
Stackhouse alone averaged 14.9 points over the eight games, and scored more than the rival bench three times. Dampier has pulled down 8.1 rebounds during the same stretch, more than he did as a starter.
"Night-in and night-out, you never know who's going to come off the bench and give us 20 [points] and 10 [rebounds] or those 30 minutes," Josh Howard said. "Look at Damp, he's putting that second center to work. He's a big part of this eight-game winning streak."
The bench not only produces, but it eats up valuable minutes. In five games during the winning streak, none of the starters played at least 40 minutes. The only game where two crossed that mark -- Dirk Nowitzki and Howard -- was a Jan. 22 overtime game at Portland.
"The guys off the bench take pride in what we can do," said Van Horn, averaging 9.6 points and 4.0 rebounds. "We realize it's a long season and [the bench] really becomes a strength later in the season."
The Mavs (34-10) go after their ninth consecutive win -- they had matching streaks each of the last two seasons -- Tuesday against Chicago at American Airlines Center.
Briefly
Former Mavs coach Don Nelson recently filmed a pilot for a George Clooney-produced sitcom. Nelson, naturally, played a coach.
