'Iron' Mike Tyson is apparently set to return to the ring on July 31st and will most likely face Kevin McBride (31-4-1, 26 KO's), a 6'6" Irish journeyman who currently resides in Brockton, MA (and has a 10 inch reach advantage). As a venue has yet to be selected, Tyson's fight will indeed be promoted by K-1, a mixed-martial arts outfit who reportedly signed Tyson to the tune of $9.5 million. Fightnews spoke to Tyson's advisor, Shelly Finkel who stated that "July 31st is a go and it will be promoted by K-1, but we are still in negotiations with McBride and that could be finalized as early as next week."
Additionally, Tyson (who turns 38 years old in June) has hired Freddie Roach as his trainer and they will begin working together after Roach accompanies Virgil Hill to South Africa to face WBA cruiser champ Jean Mark Mormeck on May 22. Tyson (50-4, 44 KO's) is currently in Arizona where he is doing weight training and road work on his own. Several weeks ago, the former two-time heavyweight champ secured a gym in Phoenix so that he could train in seclusion, however he has yet to show up.
But, Tyson did make an appearance at the Byrd-Golota fight at NY's Madison Square Garden two weeks ago. The crowd of 12,000 stood and cheered upon his arrival, which created more applause than any of the 8 fights on the Don King card - combined. The audience's cries of â??We want Tyson!' were a clear indication that Tyson is still wildly adored by NY fight fans.
Finkel also informed Fightnews that there have been active negotiations with Joe Mesi regarding a possible fight in November or December at the Garden. That bout however faces two obstacles. 1) Mesi's medical condition is still uncertain, and 2) Tyson has yet to apply (let alone be approved) for a boxing license from the pesky NYS Athletic Commission.
Also, recent reports that Tyson has formed 'Tyson Records,' a label for rappers are untrue. The news was erroneously plucked by some media outlets from a six-year-old NY Times article that was written on April 29, 1998. Of course, not long ago Tyson filed for bankruptcy protection and is not in a position to begin a new business venture.
Tyson last fought in February of 2003, where he scored a one round blowout over Clifford Etienne and previously in June of 2002 against Lennox Lewis. Being that today's heavyweight division is in desperate need of a skillfull bad a-- with a commanding presence and box office appeal, 'Iron' Mike looks to be serious about filling the bill once again and regaining another world championship.
Roach told Fightnews, "Now is the perfect time for Mike to take control of the division. The ideal scenario would be for MIke to get two fights in a row and then get him a title shot. He can do it. Mike can be heavyweight champ again... easy."
 Was solls.Roach ist mir da viel lieber.
