During the post fight press conference for Klitschko-Johnson and Mesi-Barrett, 'Iron' Mike Tyson stood quietly and unobtrusively (along with another gentleman) away from the crowd and listened to the fighters talk. Fightnews immediately spotted him and asked him how he was doing. Tyson graciously responded: "I feel good. I'm doing fine. I didn't get to see all of the fights because I had a hard time getting here because of the weather. So, I got here late."
Within seconds, Tyson was surrounded by reporters and photographers, all pushing and inching closer to get near the former two-time heavyweight champion. Forced to take several steps backwards, Tyson held up his hands and calmly stated "Relax. Everyone just take it easy."
While cameras flashed, tape recorders and microphones were drawn simultaneously along with a torrent of questions. Tyson quipped "Well, I guess you all see me now."
When asked his thoughts on Joe Mesi, the once billed 'Baddest Man on the Planet' offered politely: "Joe is an up-and-coming fighter. He's working hard and he's successful. I've seen his fight with David Izon and he looked good, I guess. I'm not following boxing that much. I came by today to see if I still have it in me."
Responding to such questions as 'Do you still have it in you?... Would you be interested in fighting Mesi?... Are you considering a fight with Roy Jones?,' a somewhat bashful Tyson only responded "I don't know."
Suddenly, Tyson became aware that nearly all of the press had abandoned the fighters who were speaking at the dais - in order to get to him. That's when Tyson walked towards the main press area (with press and others in tow) and stood respectfully to watch and listen to the fighters speak at their press conference. One by one, people squeezed forth to ask for autographs and to pose for photos with him. At times, Tyson humbly obliged some of the requests yet stated softly, "Come on, the fighters are talking. Not now, please. Let's have some respect for them."
Several minutes later, Vitali Klitschko sensed he should acknowledge Tyson in some way and stated "I see that you are here Mike Tyson, and I see a look in your eye that says maybe you want to fight me." Tyson responded jokingly, "Only if your promoter buys me a new Ferrari." Under his breath, Tyson humorously stated to those around him "Maybe I will fight him, I need the money."
As the crowd around him grew, Tyson was led out of the press conference area and down a hall towards an exit door. At 37 years old, Tyson looked fit and relaxed and was charming in his demeanor.
All in all, Madison Square Garden and Duva Boxing hosted a great evening of fights. For whatever reason Tyson chose to attend the post press conference. It was nice treat to see him in attendance.
