Has Byrd been cornered?​

The pressure is on IBF Heavyweight champion Chris Byrd now. The highest powers of the sport - HBO, Don King and the IBF would like Byrd to defend his title against 6th-rated Wladimir Klitschko in Germany in April. Byrd's contracted minumum of $2.5 million per fight with his promoter King has reportedly been raised to $3 million (also added to entice Byrd is an automatic rematch clause should he lose his title).

Yet still Byrd is resisting this lucrative plan. Instead, Byrd says he prefers to fight Monte Barrett next. But there are a few problems with that idea. Byrd vs. Barrett is a non-draw. HBO does not want to televise it. Don King does not want to promote it. And presumably, the IBF would rather see a sanctioning fee from a fight with Klitschko in it than Barrett.

And Barrett himself has other, more prosperous opportunities than a Chris Byrd fight. Barrett is currently the WBC mandatory challenger for Vitali Klitschko.

So it looks very much like Byrd's Monte Barrett-escape hatch option is an implausible one.

What options does this leave Byrd with? Well, if Byrd truly is dead-set on avoiding this potential career-best purse with Wladimir, he does have a few alternative routes he can consider. Perhaps he might choose to retire as champion, like Lennox Lewis. Or maybe he can pray that Showtime, ESPN or Best Damn Sports Show will unexpectedly jump in and offer Byrd $2.5 or $3 million to fight Barrett or Valuev or Kirk Johnson or who knows even Riddick Bowe. You can not rule anything out in the crazy world of boxing. Who knows, maybe Byrd will offer title shots to George Foreman or Larry Holmes. Or maybe Byrd will vacate the IBF Heavyweight title and move down to challenge for the newly-vacant Cruiserweight belt. Who knows? If Byrd actually will snub $3 million AND a guaranteed rematch clause to fight Wladimir Klitschko, he is probably capable of anything, logical or illogical. But ...

Heavyweight Farce: Does Wlad Klitschko Deserve A Title Shot?​

There has been a lot of talk lately about why Chris Byrd seemingly does not want to fight Wladimir Klitschko for his IBF title and lost in this conversation has been some key facts.

In his last four fights W. Klitschko has been knocked out twice, knocked out a journeyman, and struggled mightily with a suspect DaVarryl Williamson. How this justifies a title-shot is beyond any kind of logical reasoning. Some people, however, are claming that not only does he deserve a title-shot but that he has some kind of leveraging power over Byrd which is clearly absurd..

There is money in the Klitschko name, especially in Europe, and Don King and others wish to exploit this for financial reasons and force the fight in Germany. People are claiming that Byrd doesn't want to go to Germany for all kinds of underhanded reasons but all one has to do is look at the mistreatment foreign fighters have faced in Germany over the last decade and easily see why Byrd does not want to go. The first fight with W. Klitschko was one were Byrd felt ill and
was not able to perform to his top level; however this cannot be an excuse because without solid proof of any wrong-doing W. Klitschko deserves full credit for that victory.

The real question remains; why is W. Klitschko even fighting for a title? Surely Jameel McCline is
deserving of a rematch or even Fres Oquendo after their close contests with Byrd. Even the Wlad conquerors Corrie Sanders and Lamon Brewster are much more deserving. On merit there is no basis to W. Klitschko getting a title-shot. Let us look at people who are more deserving;

Monte Barrett - In a supposed eliminator he disposed of Owen Beck, previously defeated hot-prospect Dominick Guinn and tested Joe Mesi.

Nicolay Valuev - After his destruction of Attila Levin and Gerald Nobles he has to be considered the hotter former Soviet prospect.

Michael Moorer - Sure he got knocked-out by David Tua but that was only one knockout and he did win an impressive victory over Vasilly Jirov in his alt bout.

Luan Krasinqi - He hasn't been knocked out, has won, and ...

March 03, 2005 - Sources close to the situation have informed Boxingtalk.com that IBF heavyweight champion Chris Byrd has until tomorrow night to decide if he's going to accept slightly more than $3,000,000 to defend his title against Wladimir Klitschko in Germany on April 23. It looked as if the deal was going to get done but the negotiations came to an abrupt halt yesterday over differences relating the compensation of Byrd's co-promoter Bill Kozerski.

Das meine ich aber auch. Mehr Geld kann Byrd wohl nicht verdienen, und auch noch eine Rematch-Klausel, also was will er mehr.

Der Kampf gegen Byrd wird eh kommen. Was besseres kann Wladimir garnicht passieren.
Und wenn er gegen Byrd verlieren sollte, dann sollte er besser mit dem Boxen aufhören.
Ich bin aber auf jeden fall gespannt wie Wladmirs Kampf ausgehen wird. Genauso wie Vitali gegen Rahman.

Vitali hat doch sowieso mal angedeutet das er auf keinen fall wieder von vorne anfangen würde. Ich denke auch das wenn er einmal verlieren würde nicht sofort aufhört wenn er ein rematch bekommen sollte. Sollte dieses aber nicht sein, wird er wohl auch die Boxhandschuhe an den Nagel hängen.

Im ZDF wurde heute morgen von Wladimir Kltischko geäußert, dass die Kämpfe für den 23.04.2005 und 30.04.2005 geplant sind und nächste Woche eine Pressekonferenz in New York stattfinden wird.

Ich bin auf keinen Boxkampf so gespannt wie auf den nächsten von Wladimir. Meiner Meinung nach wird Wladimir boxmäßig gar nichts mehr reissen. Es verwundert mich doch sehr, daß er für viele immer noch sowas wie eine Schwergewichtshoffnung darstellt.

Wieviele Boxkämpfe hätte Wladimir wohl schon verloren, falls seine Deckungs-, Konditions- und Nervenschwäche schon vor Jahren seinen Gegner bekannt gewesen wäre? Auf jeden Fall so viele, daß er nie zu einem WM-Kampf gekommen wäre.

Sollte ich nicht auf den nächsten Gegner von Wladimir Klitschko wetten, dann werde ich für den sympathischen Wladimir die Daumen drücken. Wird aber wahrscheinlich nicht vorkommen, da sich Wetten auf Wladimirgegner quotenmäßig einfach zu sehr anbieten.
