"I think from game to game, we've played them better," Dirk Nowitzki said Sunday. "But playing them better doesn't get you anywhere in this league. You've got to find ways to win games, and we haven't done that this series. We haven't done that against them all season. For some reason, they always come out on top."
That's why the Mavericks have to make history or be history. No team has come back from a 3-0 hole in the NBA playoffs. Of the 86 times it's happened, 52 have resulted in a sweep.
"They've(nuggets) done things this year they have not done in previous years," coach Rick Carlisle said. "They've improved in so many areas. They make it hard to beat them. They got the second-best record in the West, and that doesn't happen by accident. They've become a consistent team and a better defensive team. And Chauncey Billups has certainly solidified a lot of things on their club.
"They're more than formidable. They're damn good."
Actually, the Mavericks have been brutalized all season by the Nuggets. Even if they were playing a best-of-13, they would have already lost this series over the course of the season: They're 0-7 against Denver.
This is nothing new, Carlisle said. The Mavericks have had to battle back all season, albeit never against these sort of odds.
"We've had every possible thing happen to us, and these guys have met adversity with unity, with a collective will, and every time people have wanted to write us off, they have answered the call," Carlisle said. "It's happened four or five times this year."
"Hey, that's what this is about," Carlisle said. "When it gets tough, you've got to stick together and keep fighting. That's what our guys have been about all year. They've been extremely tough. And I don't expect them to back down."
