Maxiell will never be a small forward. He can't shoot or dribble and never will. He may be versatile enough to guard the 3 but there's no way he'll ever be good enough offensivly to warrant minutes at that position.
He is a freak athlete and had some of the sickest blocks I've ever seen, no joke. He can board and finish on the break but on offense the only thing he can do (and should do) is go to the glass for offensive rebounds. He can't shoot. He can't dribble. He's the jerry stackhouse of power forwards.
He did improve every year in college statistically which speaks for his work ethic. He'll play in the NBA but will only be a back-up which is all you can expect from a pick this late.
He'll also be able to handle defending most of the power forwards in the league (eventually) since not many NBA 4's are exceptionally large nor are they good with their backs to the basket. He'll be able to stick with the jeff fosters, varejos, boshs and other 4s of the central division in small minutes.
Think Larry Smith of the 80s with much better shot blocking ability. He will be able to rebound in the NBA. He really was one of the nastiest, freakiest, most intimidating, athletic shot blockers I've seen in college basketball in a long time.
I honestly think the pistons were hoping that Francisco Garcia or Julius Hodge were available at that pick and that thought Maxiell would be available in the second round. When both were taken (I thought Hodge would be a piston for sure) they decided to not take a chance on missing out on Maxiell in the second round and drafted him much higher than he's worth.
