Chicago heavyweight prospect Giuseppe Kidd, who was supposed to fight on Saturday's boxing undercard at the United Center, remained hospitalized Wednesday in critical condition and in a medically induced coma after being injured in sparring, according to his trainer.
Kidd was sparring at the Garfield Park Fieldhouse on Tuesday afternoon when he got hit with a left hook to the head "and wobbled, but wanted to keep fighting," said trainer George Hernandez. "When he got hit with a right uppercut to the face that rocked him again, I stopped the sparring.
"He protested, but I had him lay down. I could tell something was wrong, so I called 911 and iced him down. He didn't want me to call an ambulance."
The trainer had to push back Kidd's tongue to clear his fighter's airway before the ambulance arrived. When Hernandez left the boxer at Mt. Sinai Hospital early Wednesday, "he had undergone four hours of brain surgery to reduce swelling and was in critical condition on a ventilator," the trainer said.
Kidd's family checked the fighter into the hospital under a different name so he wouldn't be bothered, Hernandez said. A hospital representative could not confirm Kidd's condition or provide additional information.
Hernandez said Kidd was hurt in the second of his final three rounds of sparring for Saturday's scheduled bout. "I've been in boxing since 1964, and this is the first time a fighter of mine has been hurt this badly," said the trainer and boxing coach. "We're all praying for him."
Kidd, who was 3-0 with two knockout victories, was wearing headgear when he was injured. He fought his first professional prizefight in May of last year and celebrated his 31st birthday Saturday.
Sparring partner Carl Davis, an Evanston heavyweight, "feels terrible," Hernandez said.
Davis, 8-2 as a pro fighter, also was the sparring partner who inadvertently cut Andrew Golota's right eyelid in training last week. The cut required 18 stitches inside and outside the eyelid and forced Golota, the Polish-born Chicago heavyweight, to withdraw from his Saturday matchup against Przemyslaw Saleta, also from Poland.
Chicago-born Oliver McCall, a former heavyweight champion, replaced Golota on the card headlined by heavyweight contenders Hasim Rahman vs. Monte Barrett in the scheduled 12-round main event.
A replacement was being sought for Kidd, who was supposed to face Volodia Lazebnik, undefeated in seven fights, in a bout scheduled for six rounds.
