Lampley and Merchant both agree that the future of the heavyweight division
lies with the fists of WBO champion Klitschko, which makes his title defense
against the veteran Mercer an important one.
"Klitschko versus Mercer is an important fight because I am among those that
believe that Klitschko is the most talented heavyweight in the world right
now," Merchant said. "And for the public that knows Mercer as being the
tough old bird that he is, it's an important transitional step to give some
recognition to Klitschko."
"But the guy I'm most interested in is Klitschko because I think he
represents the new blood in the division and it's time we looked away from
Lewis, Tyson and Holyfield," Merchant continued.
"I think Klitschko is where the future of the division is," Lampley added.
"Guys who are 6'5"-6'6", and weigh 240-250 pounds. Wladimir is a terrific
athlete, a terrific offensive boxer. We don't really know what happens yet
when he takes a big punch from a fellow big puncher or when he's in a long
war against a resilient guy like a Holyfield in his prime. But I think we
can tell that if somebody goes in and try to slug it out with Wladimir, they
will be in big trouble, because he's the bomb and he's the biggest one of
all."
