The Magic have narrowed down their coaching list to a “short list” according to a source close to a potential candidate. The front runner appears to be Mark Iavaroni, but the Magic want to talk with PJ Carlisimo first before making any offers. From the same source I was told the Magic are listening to anyone that has contacted them about the position, but they are telling their top candidates what they expect their timetable to be. The biggest sign I was told would be if the Magic do not “announce” a hiring before the end of next week. If they don’t my source firmly believes the job would have been promised to Carlisimo and due to the Spurs still being in the playoffs they will wait and announce it when their season is over.
Carlisimo comes as no surprise to me. For anyone who has followed me before Brian Hill was hired, I reported that John Weisbrod had Carlisimo and Chris Ford as his top 2 candidates if he was not allowed to hire Saunders as a dual GM/Head Coach. Being that Otis was one of Weisbrod’s assistants I know he leaned on both him and Dave Twardzik during the last hiring process. Also you have to remember Carlisimo has ties with Golden State, the team Otis & Dave were with prior to being hired in the front office with the Magic.
I know this will come as a disappointment to a lot of Magic fans if he is hired, but still he should be better than Brian Hill. Maybe now is a great time for Magic fans to reach out to Iavaroni and send out some emails persuading him to become the head coach of the Magic, make his best effort to do his best interview because the fans want him. I have got more emails about him than any other candidate so I know this is the consensus. However, I heard he was interested in the Memphis job if his friend gets the GM position. The Magic may have a tougher sales job than “Hey the Magic play in the East” if they decide Iavaroni is the #1 guy for them..
