The NBA announced last week that a few of its teams would hold training camp overseas and play preseason games against European clubs in 2006 and 2007. None of the teams has been announced, but the 76ers are expected to be part of the mix.
Yesterday, after predraft workouts at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Sixers president and general manager Billy King said that nothing was official and many details still had to be worked out, but that "the plans are for us to be part of it."
While nothing is concrete, King mentioned that Germany and Spain could be two places where the Sixers might play exhibition games.
Shot-blocker. Four players worked out for the team: 6-foot-9 Deng Gai of Fairfield, 6-10 Jermareo Davidson of Alabama, 6-11 Eddy Fobbs of Sam Houston State, and 6-8 Steven Smith of La Salle, who announced afterward that he would return to school for his senior season.
Gai is a cousin of Luol Deng, a first-round pick in 2004 of the Chicago Bulls. Gai was born in Sudan. He came to the United States in 2000 and attended prep school for a year before going to Fairfield.
He finished with 444 career blocks in 100 games and became the 16th player in Division I history to record more than 400 career blocks.
"We always like guys who block shots and are athletic, and he is one of the best in the country at blocking shots," said Tony DiLeo, the Sixers' senior vice president and assistant general manager. "He has some skills. He has to build up his body more, but he is an interesting player."
And today... The 76ers will work out 6-8 power forward Anderson Ferreira of Chipola (Fla.) Junior College; 6-11 forward/center Drago Pasalic, 18, of Croatia; and 6-8 power forward Lucas Tischer, 22, of Brazil.
