Dieser Aspekt beeindruckt mich bei Rafa ebenfalls sehr. Seine Stärke am Netz wird oftmals unterschätzt. Er hat nicht so ein Händchen wie Federer beim Volley, aber er ist trotzdem sehr stark am Netz, weil er ein sehr gutes Gespür dafür hat, wann er vorrücken sollte und wann nicht. Den Volley an sich hat er natürlich trotzdem auch über die Jahre verbessert und vor allem überkopf ist er ebenfalls sehr stark. Er ist außerdem reaktionsschnell und antizipiert vorne auch gut und zudem dosiert er sein Volleyspiel gut. Er geht da selten zu viel auf Risiko und spielt den Volley oftmals so, dass er im Notfall anschließend nochmal nachsetzt und so das Ding klar macht.
Wie Federer, Nadal und Djokovic über die Jahre ihr Spiel immer weiterentwickelt haben, ist bemerkenswert. Deswegen sind sie eben auch Legenden.

Hat sich Rafa jetzt eigtl. zum Hardcourt-Spezialisten umgeschult? Der feiert dort gefühlt ja mittlerweile mehr Erfolge als auf Sand. Das ständige (und aufwendige) Gewühle im Dreck ist wohl (mit zunehmendem Alter) nicht mehr ganz sein Ding.

So oder so passt der Begriff Sandplatzspezialist (der sehr häufig noch in den Medien verwendet wird) sowieso schon lange nicht mehr. Rafa ist einer der besten HC-Spieler aller Zeiten und mittlerweile ein richtiger Allrounder geworden. Gut, die Finals fehlen noch, aber wer brauch die schon?!

Ja, finde ich ebenso bemerkenswert. Vor der Big3 Ära war es gang und gäbe das man, wenn man in den 30er ankommt, mal langsam an Abschiedstour und Rente denkt. Das fand ich fast am Anfang befremdlich, wenn ich mal von Djokovic gehört habe, dass er da zb. als 32 jähriger noch einen Ivanisevic neu ins Team holt.
Aber das macht letztendlich den Erfolg bei den Big3 aus: solange sie spielen, wollen sie sich auch verbessern. Und die Verbesserungen in anderen Bereichen lässt sie den halben Schritt, den sie vielleicht langsamer sind, gut kompensieren. Letztendlich konnte auch bei Federer das Alter ihn nur indirekt stoppen, eben durch Verletzung, ansonsten wäre er auch letztes Jahr noch extrem wettbewerbsfähig an der Spitze gewesen schätze ich. Und es ist nicht unwahrscheinlich, dass das bei Nadal und Djokovic ähnlich laufen könnte. Dass der Körper halt irgendwie streikt. Bei Nadal gab es da ja schon vermehrt Anzeichen, umso erstaunlicher sein 2022er Comeback. Als ob der Kerl in nen Jungbrunnen gefallen ist.

Nadal: "I thought I was lost today... and in Australia, very similar feeling. But that doesn't mean that I'm not going to keep trying or keep fighting. Rafa konnte sein Dritt-Runden-Duell mit 7:5 und 6:3 gegen Dan Evans für sich entscheiden und damit seinen 400. Sieg bei einem Masters-1000-Turnier für sich verbuchen: "I didn't know at all about that, but good numbers, of course."

Nach einer eher durchschnittlichen Leistung gegen den Briten sagte er:
"The match didn't start the way that I wanted, but I was able to hit a couple of good passing shots in some key moments, and then things started to build a bit better. Das sind die Gründe, weshalb Nadal in Miami nicht dabei sein wird:

"I'm almost 36 and I've played more than I was expected at the beginning of the season. For my body it isn't good to have a quick transition from different surfaces: Clay to HC, well HC to clay. If I play Miami I won't have time to rest and time to make a sweet adaptation to clay. I'd need to push very hard from the beginning and that's dangerous for my foot and knees. So, I need to make that transition step by step and not make drastic changes as I did in the past. That's why I decided to stop after here, to have like 3 weeks before clay season starts for me."

Rafa: "I think for moments I played well. It’s difficult to play against him, always tough because he changes the dynamic of the point very quick and his serve is huge, especially the first serve. I think I played a good third set. Returning better. I was solid with the serve. Nick is one of these kind of players that you're going to have problems when he’s motivated."

Ein paar Sympathien habe ich mit der Zeit ja doch für Kyrgios entwickelt. Anders als manch anderer User finde ich es durchaus reizvoll, dass er immer mal wieder für spannende Draws sorgt. Ich hoffe er kann seine Lebemann Tenniskarriere noch ein paar Jahre fortsetzen und vielleicht gibt es ja tatsächlich mal den ein oder anderen Run.

He is a top player already, so I treated it like that, playing against one of the best players in the world.
