Doesn't happen a lot, but that's a story that really, really touched me. Damn, didn't know it had all been so hard
And there are more twists to the story.
But he certainly felt very close to his mother.
This is from a Japanese book I have:
When Kasai had won the Flying championships in Harrachov in 1992 he so much wanted to phone his mother (no live tv coverage in Japan). But it was very difficult to make a call from Czechoslovakia to Japan at that time. He had to wait a long time to be allowed to call.
When he had her on the phone finally, he just said: "I won. Mummy, I got the victory." And his mother at the other end cried for joy. She had raised her only son on her own and his sporting career gave her something to live for. Only when he realised how deeply his mother was moved he felt the joy of victory.
