I'm pretty sure that Sara is pronounced like it would be pronounced in German, so it's not the English "a" sound, it's the Germanic "a" sound like in all Germanic languages (well, if you don't count English as a Germanic language, which it is only partly). And the first "a" is pronounced with normal length, but I guess that the Japanese pronunciation doesn't have long vowels anyway, so it's always normal/short?
