Let me be one of the first to inform you that LeBron James might be leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers via free agency after the 2006-07 season -- if not sooner.
James is not happy with new Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, who didn't even think to ask James for his input before Gilbert fired coach Paul Silas last month. When it comes to key personnel decisions, Gilbert has apparently treated James as if he's no better than the 12th man on his team.
With rumors swirling about the possible firing of Cavs GM Jim Paxson, James finally voiced his frustrations Wednesday after the Cavs lost to Indiana 98-77. And King James was not a happy camper.
"We lost our coach; we get new players; we get new ownership, and now Pax might be getting fired," James said. "It's been difficult."
Besides the Cavs losing 16 of their past 23 games, James was really ticked off when starting point guard Jeff McInnis recently was benched -- with no explanation. McInnis was averaging 15 points and five assists, and the offense was free of warts when he was in the lineup.
"We stopped playing our No. 1 point guard for no reason, and that messed up some chemistry," James said. "He sat for five or six games and, as a team, we didn't know why.
"We're losing games, and there's not a reason. There was never a reason why Jeff wasn't playing. We were concerned because he is one of our brothers, one of our teammates, and we never got an explanation."
To make matters worse, the Cavs once had a firm grip on the Eastern Conference's No. 4 playoff seed. Now they're in danger of missing the playoffs -- just like last year, when they lost 11 of their final 15 games in James' rookie season.
When NBA types talk about James, he's always linked with Denver's Carmelo Anthony and Miami's Dwyane Wade. James was the top pick of the 2003 draft, Anthony third and Wade fifth.
While James has collected all of the individual accolades and has been the NBA's top drawing card, Anthony and Wade will be in the playoffs later this month for the second consecutive season. This, too, bothers James.
For all of James' glory, the Cavs have become laughable since Gilbert took over. In fact, during the late stages of Wednesday's loss to the Pacers, James and several teammates were spotted laughing on the bench.
That's not a good sign if you're a Cavs fan. But it's a good sign if you're a general manager from one of the other 29 NBA teams.
James won three consecutive high school state championships before coming to the NBA. Winning is in his blood. So, too, is stability.
Gilbert would be wise to stabilize his franchise quickly before James demands a trade.
He is under contract with the Cavs for another two seasons. But after that, you can bet Dallas, New York, Sacramento and the LAKERS, among others, will be vying for James' services.
Gilbert should be applauded for wanting to bring in his own people to run his show. By the same token, he must learn that he has to include a player of James' caliber on critical personnel moves.
Gilbert turned Quicken Loans into one of the top mortgage companies in the United States. He then purchased the Cavs for $375 million. But if James leaves, Gilbert will have mortgaged the future of a franchise that, without James, wouldn't be worth two cents.
