hier mal ein vorschlag für die offseason nächstes bzw dieses jahr.
1. DRAFT: While most people might feel the Cavs need to find a point guard or center to help fill roles, I don't think there will be either that will be able to really help the Cavs in the near future, unless Darius Washington or Marcus Williams (UConn) are still available when the Cavs draft.
I would suggest that Danny Ferry draft the most explosive and athletic swing player that is still on the board. If the Cavs are positioned somewhere in the high teens or early 20s, I would target a player like BRANDON RUSH (if he declares) or JAMES WHITE (from Cinci). Even though Brandon Rush might not declare and James White is currently a second round prospect, both are unbelievable athletes with star potential. I suspect James White will watch his stock rise after teams work him out.
But, the reasoning for drafting such a player despite the Cavs already having LeBron and Hughes is twofold. First, Larry Hughes' problems with staying healthy is a concern. A player like Rush or White can fit in better than a Sasha Pavlovic or Luke Jackson simply because they are more athletic and can run with LeBron as opposed to be spot-up jumpers who need to be set up. And, secondly, the Cavs must prepare for the possibility of LeBron leaving. Now, it's likely not going to happen. But, if for some reason it does, the Cavs will have a player with star potential ready to step in as a ticket sales type player.
Unless there is a quality point guard ready to step in or a center with legitimate center size and a decent offensive game or a nasty streak, then the Cavs should get an athletic phenom that has star potential.
2. TRADES:This is obviously predicated on whether the other team is willing to do the trades.
FIRST TRADE: Ira Newble and Sasha Pavlovic for Brent Barry. The trade makes sense for both teams. With the addition of Michael Finley, the Spurs do not have much playing time for Brent Barry. And, with Bruce Bowen getting older, the Spurs could use a defensive minded swingman who is a little younger for spot defensive assignments. Enter Newble. Sasha will be included to help match salaries, and should entice the Spurs more as a spot up jump-shooter. The Cavs, on the other hand, truly need some veteran leadership in the backcourt. While Eric Snow has that, Brent Barry brings a wealth of experience (including playoff experience) as well, with the experience of being on a championship team. Danny Ferry could use a veteran team guy like Barry on this Cavs team, even if he is not a starting caliber player anymore. He could certainly step in and start if he needed to, again with Hughes being often injured. But, he won't demand big minutes.
SECOND TRADE: Donyell Marshall and Luke Jackson for Jason Collins. This doesn't really look like a big trade for either team, but I think for what each team needs, it could work out very well for both. New Jersey supposedly was looking at Marshall last summer before Cleveland signed him. Luke Jackson--like Sasha Pavlovic in the previous trade--will be a sweetner. The Nets really need some scoring in at the power forward spot, and while Donyell hasn't exactly been great as the season has progressed, he might be a really good fit for New Jersey as a fourth option scorer in their starting line-up. Now, Cleveland gets a player with legitimate center size, and one that has starting experience. Collins may not be in the same mold as an Alonzo Mourning, but he brings more toughness than anything Cleveland has in their frontcourt bench right now. And, Collins has been to two NBA finals and has been in a host of important playoff games. He can play both center and power forward.
3. SIGNINGS:
DREW GOODEN: Re-sign Gooden. He is not the best power forward in the league, and he's not even the best power forward on the free agent market. But, unless the Cavaliers can find one cheap enough that will provide 8+ rebounds per game and bring energy, then the Cavs should re-sign Gooden. I don't think the Cavs have a chance at Nene, Chris Wilcox, Al Harrington, or any other upgrades. So, Drew Gooden should remain a Cavalier.
FRED JONES: Give him the entire MLE if that's what it takes. In my opinion, he's the best fit at point guard for the Cavaliers that is a free agent. Perhaps another team will offer him more, but it's unlikely. Fred Jones is 6-2 and 215. He has great size if he plays the point guard position. He has an adequate handle and a good jumper, not great. But, what he will bring is great athleticism and defense at the point guard spot with more offense than Snow has. With Larry Hughes and LeBron, the starting point guard does not need to be a great ball-handler or playmaker. Fred Jones really fits on this Cavs team.
Re-signings or current players: Do not re-sign Flip Murray. It will be a mistake to do so. He was fine for this season as a stopgap combo guard, but if he commands anything more than 2 million dollars, he is not worth it.
OTHER CHANGES:
-Try to give Damon Jones away for anything. If someone will take Damon Jones for anything that will even moderately help the Cavaliers, then I say Ferry should do it. He has been a disappointment and will continue to be so. And, once his minutes gets reduced even more (and deservingly so), he could also become a distraction, if not a cancer to the team.
-Add MARC IAVARONI to the coaching staff as the coach for the offense. He was once in Cleveland under Fratello. And, his experiences in Phoenix over the last few years serve as a great evaluation of how good he could be for the struggling Cavalier offense.
-And, perhaps pick up a third point guard and some team guys to fill up the roster.
CONCLUSION: These are all my personal suggestions, and in no way do I mean to infer I am more equipped to make personnel decisions than any NBA GM. But, I really think the above changes would make the Cavaliers infinitely better. If the Cavs made these moves, next year's roster would look something like the following:
Fred Jones >> Eric Snow >> Will Conroy
Larry Hughes >> Brent Barry
LeBron James >> Brandon Rush
Drew Gooden >> Anderson Varejao >> Sean Marks
Zydrunas Ilgauskas >> Jason Collins >> Martynus Andriuskevicius
gar nich schlecht. etwas radikal, aber find ich gut. nur jones und donyell werden wir wohl mit ihren verträgen nich wegbekommen
