USA - NBA set for Euroleague showdown
PARIS (NBA/Euroleague) - The NBA will send four teams to Europe next summer to take part in a pre-season tournament with sides from the Euroleague.
The NBA, who are always looking to strengthen its presence in Europe, will give more details in a press conference at Auburn Hills on Tuesday where the Detroit Pistons are hosting the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
Tom Marchesi of NBA Europe told PA International: "We are going to announce a tournament next summer involving NBA teams and some Euroleague teams that will take place in different cities in Europe."
Some of the leading players in the NBA, such as San Antonio's Manu Ginobili and Memphis Grizzlies' Pau Gasol, played in the Euroleague before crossing the Atlantic and there are likely to be plenty more to follow.
The Euroleague is widely regarded as the leading basketball competition outside of the NBA.
One of Europe's top coaches, Ettore Messina, who has taken part in the Euroleague with Italian giants Benetton Treviso, is fully in favour of the move.
"I think it's great," Messina told PA International.
"It brings European basketball and the NBA closer.
"It will be a fantastic thing for the fans that love this sport and for the players because they have the opportunity to play against the best.
"Certainly for the coaches it will be a great experience."
Köln hat ne große Halle.....
Wollen wir hoffen das die NBA Teams nicht wieder kurz vorher kneifen, von wegen Terrorangst, Flugzeugentführung und wovon der normale Ami heutzutage noch so ständig bedroht wird...
