When the game was over, after the Lakers had blown their last attempt for a game-tying three-pointer, Kobe Bryant yelled at Lamar Odom for botching the play. He continued yelling at him as the team walked dejectedly off the court and didn't stop until they entered the locker room.
Bryant had yelled at his teammates all game long. But he saved his harshest words for Odom at the end of Monday night's 94-91 loss to the Washington Wizards before 20,173 at the MCI Center.
Bryant, who suffered a sprained right thumb while scoring 31 points, yelled at Sasha Vujacic for not getting him the ball in the second quarter. Bryant yelled at Luke Walton for taking a shot instead of passing him the ball. Bryant yelled at Devean George for taking a shot and told him, "Hey, Devean, bring me that (ball)."
"There was some irritation," Coach Phil Jackson said.
Odom, who had a subpar game with nine points and four rebounds, was asked about an exchange of words with Bryant.
"I didn't hear anything," Odom said.
Bryant's three-pointer pulled the Lakers to within 94-91 with 1:26 left.
Odom rebounded a Washington miss but missed a three-pointer with 41 seconds left. However, the Lakers got the ball back with 16 seconds left when Gilbert Arenas (34 points) was called for traveling.
The Lakers, who had led by as many as 16, called a timeout to set up the play. But Bryant was double-teamed by 6-foot-11 Jared Jeffries and 6-11 Calvin Booth, and in attempting to pass the ball to Brian Cook, Bryant lost it for his fifth turnover.
"We botched the play up" and the spacing was wrong, said Bryant, who made 10 of 27 shots from the field.
The Lakers looked confused when they took the ball out of bounds on that final play. Odom waved his arms, apparently forgetting where he was supposed to be.
"He was supposed to be on the left side," Bryant said. But Odom was on the right side.
