LOL:
News: The Atlanta Thrashers acquired defenseman Mathieu Schneider from Anaheim on Friday for defenseman Ken Klee and forwards Brad Larsen and Chad Painchaud. The 39-year-old Schneider had 12 goals and 39 points in 65 games last season, his lone season with the Ducks. He will make $5.75 million this season, giving the Ducks a salary-cap savings of at least $3 million in the deal.
News: The Rangers also reassigned 16 players to Hartford of the AHL on Thursday, trimming the training camp roster to 26 players. Sent down to the minors were: goalie Matt Zaba; defensemen Mike Busto, Vladimir Denisov, Bobby Sanguinetti, and Michael Sauer; and forwards Artem Anisimov, Joe Barnes, Dane Byers, Brodie Dupont, Ryan Hillier, Andreas Jamtin, Greg Moore, Tom Pyatt, Justin Soryal, Dale Weise, and Tomas Zaborsky. Defensemen Maxim Kondratiev and Thomas Pock, and forwards Hugh Jessiman and P.A. Parenteau will continue training camp with Hartford.
News: Sergei Gonchar will be kept out of the Pittsburgh Penguins' lineup at least through the regular-season opener in two weeks because of a dislocated left shoulder. Gonchar, who sustained the injury during the first period of the Penguins' preseason opener Saturday, led the reigning Eastern Conference champions in ice time last season and was third on the team in scoring with 12 goals and 53 assists. Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero said surgery is an option for the 34-year-old defenseman, who is entering his 14th NHL season, but Shero would offer no other timetable. "I think Sergei is at a point right now where he just needs to gather as much information possible through the doctors and make a decision when he's comfortable making a decision," Shero said.
Analysis: Shero said it was too early to speculate on the minimum amount of time Gonchar will miss. During the preseason two years ago, Penguins center Evgeni Malkin sustained a dislocated shoulder during the first preseason game that forced him to miss the first four regular season games. Malkin, however, was only 20 then. If Gonchar ultimately has surgery, he could be out much longer. Gonchar is one of the NHL's premier offensive defensemen, having accumulated 430 points in 904 career games. He ranked second in the league in scoring at his position last season with 12 goals and 53 assists for 65 points and has had at least 57 points each of the past eight seasons. Gonchar's injury means that Pittsburgh will open the season without their top two defensemen. Ryan Whitney underwent foot surgery last month and is likely out until December. A tough break for the Penguins and Fantasy owners. It still might be worth drafting Gonchar as a high-end Fantasy defenseman; just realize there is a lot of risk involved.
Es heißt erst einmal indefinitely.
News: The Montreal Gazette reports that Canadiens LW Alex Tanguay has a pulled groin and is likely doubtful for Montreal's preseason game vs. the Senators on Friday.
News: Detroit Red Wings D Nicklas Lidstrom has a broken nose after being hit in the face with a puck during an exhibition game. He was helped off the ice Wednesday night in Detroit during an exhibition game against Montreal. The Detroit News reports Lidstrom will miss the next three exhibition games, two of which he wasn't scheduled to play in anyway.
News: Blues D Erik Johnson, the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft, tore two ligaments in his right knee during a recent golf outing and is expected to miss the entire season but recover fully. "In our business you get a few curveballs," team president John Davidson said Tuesday night before St. Louis played Dallas in a preseason game. "This is a pretty good curveball." Johnson, 20, was injured during a team golf outing on Sept. 16 when his right foot got caught between the accelerator and the brake of his golf cart. The Blues had to wait for swelling in the knee to go down before a diagnosis could be made. Two surgeons determined that Johnson tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in the knee that will require an operation to fix.
