This has been a series of miscommunications," Cheeks said before last night's game. "I've got to take responsibility for that because I am the coach. My communication with Chris and Allen should've been better, and my communication with you [reporters] should've been better... I know how important [the fans] are to our team.
"Personally, I'm very sorry for my communication to you and the fans. In no way do I want to disillusion anyone about Allen and Chris... That day [the Sixers were eliminated], I was clouded. I was clouded, based upon not making the playoffs, based upon our vision of having a better season... [But] in no way is that an excuse."
Cheeks said that he talked with both Iverson and Webber, and that "they were very apologetic about getting there late [Tuesday]."
"They were just sorry; they were sorry this has taken place, as I am," Cheeks said. "Certainly, in the future, my communication with them, their communication with me will be a lot better. [The policies] are something we'll talk about, [whether] we will enforce it a little bit more, the dress code and all those things."
Both Iverson and Webber said there was nothing wrong with arriving late, because they weren't going to play, but neither anticipated that the situation would blow up as it did.
"I definitely wasn't trying to disrespect Mo in any way, or the fans, like everybody's talking about," Iverson said. "I've been here for 10 years, and to just deliberately try to disrespect the fans is crazy. I would never try to do that in any way... I had no idea it was Fan Appreciation Night or anything like that. I had no idea.
"I honestly thought, long as I got there before the ball went up, everything would be cool. I had no idea it was going to turn out this way. It's been like that for years, that I didn't play, I come in there right before tipoff and it was cool. I feel like, because it was the last home game and Fan Appreciation Night, everybody made a big deal out of it, but I've been doing it my whole career. It had never been a problem; even when coach [Larry] Brown was here, it had never been a problem. It was just [Tuesday] night."
Webber said, "We didn't try to shun the fans or whatever's being reported, [to] disrespect the fans."
"When you're not necessarily loved by the media, the fans are all you have," he said. "We acted as we acted all season, or like I've been with other teams when I've been hurt. If we would have known it would develop into this, of course we wouldn't do it."
