A day after ending his brief retirement and 10 days after losing his World Boxing Association title in a 12-round decision, Chelsea's John Ruiz could be reinstated as heavyweight champion should reports prove true that James Toney tested positive for steroids after their April 30 fight at Madison Square Garden.
Although neither the New York State Athletic Commission, which administered the post-fight drug test, nor the WBA have officially confirmed the finding, word that Toney's ``A'' sample yielded a positive result circulated through the boxing world yesterday.
The Ruiz camp may not have been entirely surprised. A month before the fight, Ruiz' attorney, Tony Cardinale, suggested to New York commissioner Ron Scott Stevens that Toney's antagonistic behavior at a pre-fight press conference might have been consistent with a man in a steroid rage, and urged the commission to be diligent in the post-fight drug test.
``That's what I've heard, but no one has called me to verify it,'' Toney's trainer, Freddie Roach, said from his Hollywood Gym last night when asked about the steroid report.
Recalling the 233-pound Toney's corpulent physique, Roach noted ``he sure as hell didn't look like a guy on steroids, unless steroids make you fat.''
Roach insisted he would never knowingly allow one of his fighters to bulk up chemically.
``I don't like that stuff at all,'' the trainer said. ``But I don't know what they might have given him to treat that biceps injury.''
After Toney tore a biceps muscle in his fight against Rydell Booker last September, the injury healed with remarkable alacrity, and it is possible that residue from a steroid-based treatment might have remained in his system.
Ironically, two months before the Ruiz fight, Toney, participating in an online chat for a boxing Web site, was asked about steroid use in boxing. He replied that while he believed some boxers used them, the regulatory bodies did a good job of keeping steroids from the fight game through drug testing. READMORE
