Tyson to fight in January?
By Ludo Sáenz
One of the most interesting topics discussed at the WBC convention last week in Russia, was the status of former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in the top rankings of the sanctioning body. It has been reported that Tyson, who has had just one fight (which he won by TKO1 over Clifford Etienne) since his devastating loss in June 2002 to WBC champion Lennox Lewis, signed a contract with a Japanese promotional company and plans to participate in a K-1 rules match. WBC president José Sulaimán expressed sorrow over Tyson's involvement in K-1. "It is criminal and it is killing boxing in Japan," warned Sulaimán. The WBC committee recommended the withdrawal of Tyson from the rankings, however, manager/matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz speaking on behalf of promoter Chris Webb and the promotional firm "Straight Out Promotions" promised that a K-1 fight is not in the works for Tyson and that Iron Mike is preparing to fight in January. "He [Tyson] will fight in Louisville on January 24 in a 'Straight Out Promotions' card," said Lewkowicz to Fightnews.com. "What Mike Tyson wants is to become champion again and the green belt has always attracted him. Based on the trust of the council in me, they (the WBC) accepted - with no documentation - my word that he would not fight in K-1, and that Tyson had a commitment letter with 'Straight Out Promotions.' If this fight does not take place, they will definitely remove him from the rankings."
