Harri Olli or Janne Ahonen or Janne Väätäinen are not the problem. They give face for the parts of the problem and if I have understood correctly neither of the first two are especially easy persons to deal with. The real problem is how Finnish ski jumping was managed few years ago. Nikunen and Federation was happy to ride with Ahonen's success and about everything else was let go.
Young jumpers were not supported or worked with. Finnish ski federations finances was let to the ruins. Few generations of jumpers were lost (only few especially stubborn managed somehow.) Grass roots of Finnish ski jumping started to rebel. Talented jumpers who for example got hurt or something else went wrong were forgotten and left for their parents to pick up the pieces. This was one of the main problems that caused rebelling. Everything was aimed to help Ahonen to success, nothing else mattered.
How much Ahonen himself had anything to do with this, how much it was same old Lahti, Puijo, Ounasvaara thing, I don't know. Where are rumours how for example Ahonen said that he wouldn't jump in the same team with Kalle Keituri. At that time Keituri never got the chance at the A-team even if he had deserved it at the time. But still, problems are not Ahonen's doing. He didn't choose Jussilainen or Kiuru again and again to the team ahead of young talented boys. He certainly didn't ruin Ski Federations finances.
But two years ago situation was impossible. Väätäinen made miracles happen last year. Now financial situation is even worse. There was almost no money for training camps last summer. What training camps they had, jumpers paid themselves. They don't have money to take the most convenient flights to the competitions, they have to take cheapest even if they make things really difficult. They have absolutely not enough workforce or other resources. Fortunately they got really lucky with Lappidoc offering them very cheap deal with health management, otherwise they wouldn't even have physio with them.
I don't believe the question after this season will be, if the Finnish Ski Federations wants to make new contract with Väätäinen. Question will be if Väätäinen wants anything to do with the whole crap any more. Finnish Ski Federation certainly will not have money to pay anyone better or be able to allure anyone. Väätäinen has said he doesn't want to continue with this resources. He may love ski jumping but he has also his own life and own businesses. Worst case scenario is, that next year Finnish head coach is Toni Nieminen, because no one else wants the job. (Nieminen has coached few years ago some juniors, his coaching experience is all together about two or three years, he has no education about the matter etc. He used to be decent jumper once thought.)
