The film was just a documentary of their life on the road during the Don't Believe The Truth tour. Press interviews, some concert footage, random stuff, etc. Here's what I remember:
- The song in the trailer is Lord Don't Slow me Down. A bit of it was played in the film over some footage and then in it's entirety during the credits. It's a great song and Noel has a line in the chorus in which he sings "and I pray the lord don't slow me down". It was also listed in the credits.
- The band and Kasabian start talking about Tom Cruise backstage. Noel: "he's a fucking midget" (aren't they about the same height?), Liam: "Cocktails was a great film, aside from that he's a cunt" or something along those lines. This was right before Liam enters a room and performs his now infamous dance.
- Concert footage of Champagne Supernova, Lyla, Don't Look Back In Anger, and maybe one other song was shown. Audio was taken from one show and the video was a compilation of multiple concerts.
- Noel played two songs backstage, another two during soundcheck and Gem and Andy played a song in their hotel room on acoustic guitar. I've never heard any of them before but it could have been just them playing and not any actual songs.
- Part of an acoustic version of Live Forever was played over some driving footage. It didn't sound like the demos but more like a studio version.
- There were some very funny scenes and almost all involved Liam.
- There was way too much of Phil the DJ/Hanger-on and some other random guy. They were in just about every other scene and wouldn't shut up.
- Noel said that he doesn't know how Mick Jagger has been touring for as long as he has. He said that he thinks it's coming to end for him because it's too long. Someone asked about this comment during the Q&A and Noel said that they'd stop when Liam loses his hair but the guy asked "what if that never happens" and Noel said that the day when he goes to pick up a guitar and slips a disc then it's time to call it quits.
The Q&A:
- Matt Pinfield was the moderator and asked a lot of questions himself:
Will there be another Masterplan type album with such great songs as It's Better People and One Way Road? Noel said that it was the plan until Sony wanted to release a greatest hits.
What's next? Again no plans as of yet but the last time this happened Don't Believe The Truth was recorded so it isn't a bad thing.
What was it like recording at Capitol?
Great and that he may have uttered the word awesome at some point.
- Something about Stop the Clocks was asked to which Noel responded that they have so many versions recorded. "One with drums, one without, one with me singing, one with Liam singing", etc. He mentioned that it was only played once and that "it went down like a knackered lift" because it's "a very introspective and spiritual song" and the teenagers there couldn't give a shit. He also said that "it's quite long".
- A girl said how she knew when she heard Wonderall that her life was going to change and asked Noel if he had ever felt that way. He said that the moment for him was when he wrote Live Forever because before that he was writing a certain kind of music and after that he was writing a different kind.
- Towards the end he was asked "if you could have one Beatles album which would you choose and why?" Noel selected the Blue album because it had all the hits. He then remarked, "that was a shit question" and asked for another. I think this was when Evan just stood up and Matt Pinfield pointed to him.
- Some girl said that she knows his mother has been a great influence or inspiration to his songs and does he have any others. Noel said that she only influenced one line in Live Forever to which she said "and one in Don't Look Back In Anger" and Noel said "got anymore?". He listed his inspirations as Neil Young and Bob Dylan since he listens to those two more than anyone else but his music doesn't sound anything like either of them.
- What do you think is your most "Beatley" song? Noel: Go Let It Out
- Who's songwriting do you admire the most? The Stone Roses, Las, Smiths
- What comes first the music or the lyrics? He mentioned that one day you may play Am, "the loneliest of all chords", and it may mean nothing but the next day it may be the opposite and it flows from there. The good songs are the eays ones and the one's that you struggle with become album fillers.
- Some guy: How much would I have to pay you to sing Digsy's Dinner and The Girl In The Dirty Shirt?
Noel: Right now?
Some guy: Right now
Noel: Marcus (Russell who was there in by the back of the audience), how much do I charge? ....Ain't gonna happen
- A question was asked about his relationship with Liam. Standard answer here and he thinks that it would be a more interesting dynamic if he just wrote the music and Liam wrote the lyrics.
The were some more questions and they were pretty good overall. There weren't any stupid ones asking about his favorite city to play in, favorite live song, does he really hate Liam, and so on. We all wrote down a question on a card which was then placed in a Stop The Clocks ballot box but obviously only a few were selected. I was going to ask about his feelings on the recent eBay sale of his 1989 demo tape and if he ever got it back as was the plan.
I just remembered a few other things from the Q&A regarding Be Here Now.
Why do you hate the album so much?
Noel said that the songs were too long and the production was could have been better but they were having too much of a good time to bother with reviewing them. Someone told him "Don't you think D'You Know What I Mean? is just a bit too long?" and he said "It's not long enough!". He always says that there's still a tape player somewhere in England that still playing the last song "to this day it's still going". He doesn't really like the songwriting aside from Don't Go Away, D'You Know What I Mean?, My Big Mouth, and Stand By Me.
Why don't you ever play any of it live?
I can't really remember the answer to this question but it was something to the effect that it's too long and that he doesn't really like the songwriting, etc.
Why aren't there any songs from Be Here Now on Stop The Clocks?
It's more of a complete album and the songs would be out of place since they're so long. He said that Stop The Clocks is for that kid 15 years from now who only has money to buy one album and thinks to himself "what is that band me dad is always on about?". So he'll buy Stop The Clocks as a starter and still has a whole album to get to as well. Noel said that this is how he got into The Beatles with the red and blue albums.
