By Anthony Evans: In June, underachieving British heavyweight Danny Williams pic by Mr Will
accepted what, in international pay-per-view terms, was bum money to fight two-time world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in Louisville, Kentucky. Williams told anyone who would listen he'd undercut what Kevin McBride had been offered to fight Iron Mike because he truly believed he'd knock Tyson out.
To the shock of many the gamble paid off with a four round crushing of the former 'Baddest Man on the Planet'. Now Williams is almost a cert to challenge Vitali Klitschko for the World Boxing Heavyweight championship in the Ukrainian's adoptive Germany on December 10 or 17. And Williams, who began 2004 with a dreadful performance in losing his British Title to Michael Sprott, is steely confident of finishing the annum as the heavyweight champion of the world.
"This is exactly the fight I wanted, the reason I took the short money for the Tyson fight," Williams said from his London, England, home. "I knew beating Tyson would turn my career around and get me back to where I always knew I should be."
"It will be very interesting because of Klitschko's height, "Williams continued. "Technique wise, I don't rate him at all. It's just his height and size which make him effective - if he were 6ft 2inch we'd never have heard of him. He's an average fighter, but his strength and height have made him a champion. He can't fight much on the inside, he's got a stamina problem, big time, he can't fight going backwards and he doesn't throw many combinations.
"But I respect his power. I know this is another fight where I'll take big 'uns for a while like I did against Tyson. But he doesn't hit as hard as Tyson because he'd have more early round knockouts in world class than he actually does. "
At around 6ft 2inches, the man who has adopted the moniker 'the Legend Killer' will be some 5inches shorter than the champion but will still enjoy a size advantage; Williams scaled 265lbs for Tyson while Vitali averages around 245lbs. The Londoner's trainer, former European champion Jim McDonnell, believes his fighter will have a strength, speed, skill and - perhaps most importantly - stamina advantage.
'Jimmy Mac' told SecondsOut: "Stamina will win this for us. After six rounds against Lennox Lewis (in June 2003, when facial damaged resulted in Klitschko losing via TKO) Klitschko was absolutely shattered. Against Corrie Sanders (w rsf 8, April 2004) Klitschko was so out of breath he could hardly speak even 10 minutes afterwards and that fight was fought at a really slow pace. Danny is a real athlete - he carries 19stone (265lbs) easily and can still run 100 metres in 13 seconds and push jeeps up hills. I'm going to have Danny's lungs burning in training and we'll set a pace Klitschko cannot match. I see Danny taking him out in nine rounds."
Williams and Jimmy Mac will be meeting promotional outfit Sports Network Tuesday to discuss the fight and details are expected over the coming weeks. The fight is not signed yet but, with self-promoted Klitschko openly talking about the fight, it looks good to go.
NOTE: One would suspect Williams's marking time fight against Oleg Maskaev in London in October will be called off but we will await an announcement on that.
Danny Williams und sein Trainer scheinen fest dran zu glauben dass sie Vitali schlagen können. ich denke man kann dies schlecht beurteilen.
