Irgendwie hört sich dieser Kampfbericht anders an:
Rahman Captures WBU title Stops Sanders - By Luis Escobar
(May 20, 2000) Atlantic City (Ballys Park Place)
Hasim "The Rock" Rahman won the lightly regarded WBU heavyweight title by scoring an explosive 7th round TKO over South African Corrie Sanders.
Rahman floored Sanders twice en route3 to the victory and then eventually halted the champion at 1:50 of the 7th following a barrage of unanswered punches that forced referee Eddie Cotton to stop the fight.
"I felt like I was givin as good as I was takin," Rahman said after the victory. "He was landing one but he wasn't landing combinations. I would also stun him occasionally and make him retreat."
At 1:45 of the first round Rahman (33-2, 27 KO's) trapped Sanders (36-2, 26 KO's) on the ropes and unloaded on the southpaw champion as he languished in the corner. Rahman (245) drilled Sanders with several punishing righst and hooks on the inside. Sanders, 6'4" came back firing and after escaping from the corner nailed Rahman, Baltimore, MD, with three sharp left hands to the head. With 31-seconds remaining in the 1st, Rahman connected with a solid left hook to the body but Sanders, Pretoria, S.A. returned fire and jolted the challenger with a sharp combination. With less than 10-seconds remaining in the round, Sanders jolted Rahman with a lead left hand to the chin. The challenger immediately countered and scored with a looping overhand right.
The action continued in the 2nd and with 1:48 to go in the round, Rahman, 6'2 ½", tagged Sanders with a clean overhand right to the jaw. Sanders was able to fight out of the corner and responded by nailing Rahman with a sharp counter left cross that wobbled the challenger. With the crowd screaming and standing on their feet, Sanders hammered Rahman with three powerful straight lefts to the head. In the last few seconds of the 2nd, Sanders caught the flat-footed Rahman with a three-shot combination to the head. The challenger reeled back against the ropes while Sanders kept the pressure on firing leather. At the bell, referee Cotton jumped between the fighters and Rahman staggered back to his corner.
With 57-seconds remaining in the 3rd, Sanders caught Rahman coming in with a devastating left uppercut to the head. The blast snapped Rahman's head back as he lunged forward and his momentum left him draped over the ropes with the champion throwing more head shots. Referee Cotton ruled it a knockdown because the ropes kept Rahman from hitting the floor. When the bout resumed Sanders continued firing shots until he was tagged with a massive counter right hand to the chin. The blast caught Sanders square in the face and propelled him back across the ring and dropped him to his hands and knees. Sanders was up at two but as Cotton tolled out the mandatory-eight, the champion returned to kneeling back down on one knee.
Rahman tried to end matters early in the 4th but walked into a sharp right-left combination that wobbled the challenger. Both men unloaded all their heavy artillery and traded salvos along the ropes. However, a right hand from Rahman caught Sanders flush and dropped the South African champion as he tumbled to the deck. Sanders complained that he had been tripped but his appeal fell on deaf ears. When the bout continued Sanders still appeared to be in trouble and on shaky legs. Nevertheless, the South African survived the remainder of the fifth.
At the 2:07 mark of the 6th, Rahman drilled Sanders with a savage right hand lead flush on the jaw but he kept his feet. The champion rallied midway through the 6th and caught Rahman with three consecutive hard left hands to the head.
Rahman opened the seventh with a series of several tough left jabs that forced the champion to retreat. At the 1:38 mark of the 7th, Rahman tagged Sanders with a straight right hand to the mouth. Rahman followed up with another savage right that froze Sanders in his tracks. The champion attempted to cover up but Rahman unloaded a furious 28-shot salvo as Sanders was driven backwards. The champion careened across the ropes with Rahman firing unanswered punches until the referee Cotton finally jumped between the athletes. The night was mercifully all over for Sanders, who was unable to defend himself. Official time of the TKO victory came at 1:50 of the seventh round.

Hmmm. Hört sich eher nach einem heftigen ausgeglichenen Brawl an. Stimmt dieser Bericht?
